Cover Song Wednesday! Today's YouSendIt mp3 bonanza: Cover songs. The more unexpected, the better. Let's start out with a funky soul/gospel-tinged cover of Seven Nation Army with low-down female vocals, from Nostalgia 77.
Oh, matildaben, you're killing me. I've pretty much already sent all mine to the swap. I'll see what I can come up with.

I always want to spell Michael as Micheal. I have to catch myself every time or I do it. I don't understand that.
Might as well repost this one: Senator Bobby - Wild Thing.

Cat Power covering Schizophrenia from Sonic Youth's Sister.

Laibach covering "I Me Mine". I don't really like this cover very much; their cover of "Across the Universe" is much better. But this is more unexpected.

wow the ella fitzgerald song is brilliant!

John Cale covering "Heartbreak Hotel", also from June 1, 1974.

I am only posting this because I am convinced that there are some people who haven't heard them yet. As we all know, 2005 will be better known as the year in which white folk artists covered hip-hop.

Swim in the irony!
Nina Gordon - Straight out of compton
Dynamite Hack - Boyz in Tha Hood
Opie and Anthony skit - James Taylor covering DMX's Party Up

Does anyone have Ben Folds doing "Bitches Aint Shit?"
posted by Quartermass 27 July | 11:21
Jon Auer of The Posies covering "Beautiful Stranger"

and, as long as we're at it, in the spirit of the Big Star news yesterday, here are The Posies covering I Am The Cosmos.

...and, what the hell, here's Lali Puna covering/transmorgrifying Georgio Moroder's "Electric Dreams"

After Weezer released Pinkerton, the story goes that Rivers went bat-shit crazy and put the band on hiatus. The only thing released between Pinkerton (1996) and The Green Album (2001) was this cover of the Pixies song "Velouria." This prompted many fans to rejoice, as the song is a monster. Alas, we all know how the story ends - and when it involves Muppets, you know it didn't turn out well.

(Ammistrator or other kind person, please hope me unnerstand . . . I write the word I want to have as a link, then press the "link" button, which produces a link window into which I paste the link, then press "OK" for that window, than the it works? I feel very, very stupid right now, like a right noobwit.)

Since I have no access to my vast collection of covers here at work, I'll just point you to Copy, Right?, an mp3 blog devoted to covers. Good stuff, especially for you Golden Girls fans.

Absit Invidia - write the word you want linked, highlight the word, then hit the link button.

Absit, I didn't see your comment until now, but I just emailed you some instructions. If they don't make sense, email me back.

Quartermass: That's what I did, twice. Maybe I've got gremlins in my works. Ah, well . . . Did the messy way produce something listenable?
posted by Absit Invidia 27 July | 11:56
well, now your email has bounced back to me, so email me if you want me to send it elsewhere.

Eh, I'm dumping some more Tori on you people. *can't find dvd of nothing but covers, has limited choices this morning*

I hope I did not somehow lose a few of my DVD-Rs, I can't find three MP3 dics and one of nothing but storm photos, most of which I have no other copies of. Gah.

Anyway. Tori doing Love Song by the Cure.

Eventually I am going to make jonmc shoot himself with my selections.
If you like Morrissey, and you like The Decemberists, and you haven't heard Colin Meloy Sings... Morrissey, then you are missing out.

This cover takes a great non-funky song and makes it funkier than ten miles of chitlins in hot sauce...

and this, it's not a cover but this song could be a description of the beauty that is this place...

Supposedly the late lamented Fastbacks did a cover of "Go All The Way," but I've never heard it. If their covers of "Rocket Man," and "Waterloo Sunset," are any indication, I bet it's great.
