Searching for the Wrong-Eyed Jesus is part documentary/part road movie/part good and weird. Pentacostals, honky tonks, and Sheffield's Jesus Is Lord Country Kitchen[More:] Went with my mom and sister to see this today, evidently it opened in New York City (at the IFCenter) and Greensboro -- where I am -- got it for twenty-four hours in conjunction with this fella Birney Imes' photographs of juke joints that are showing down here.
We're awfully lucky to have gotten this. There was some talk about the southern stereotypes in this (blank-eyed boy staring into camera before spitting, junkyard highways, etc.) and several times I did get the shivers, but I think there is a higher aim, to show something that isn't so daggum washed-out and everywhere. (There's a part where Jim White -- the tour guide -- says if you travel on the interstates in the south you'll see Cracker Barrels & Pier 1 but if you get off I-95 you'll see the good stuff.) I don't know, I had some big bristling towards the film but I also found myself very moved. I could listen to Harry Crews all day. Anyhow, this is a recommendation if you're anywhere near where this is playing or if it happens by you.

Semi-self-link: here's a review by a friend (some of you know her as cowboy_sally); I also post reviews at her site.

That's excellent, that review. Right on the money. I kept wishing for more of Jim White and Harry Crews talking. The Handsome Family playing on the front porch of the flooded house bugged the crap outta me. I read somewhere that Andrew Douglas talked about this at earlier screenings, said something about how there weren't any golfers in it (if you wanna see something really scary...)

Thanks so much for the link, I might have missed this one otherwise. Sounds worth it for the music alone.
