Okay, it has come down to Ask MeCha. Who was the
FIRST TV/radio cowboy to whistle for his horse?[More:]Answers around here have run from "The Lone Ranger, of course!" to "Didn't Roy Rogers do it first?" to "Hell, they all did it!", which I just can't accept. Someone, somewhere, started the western-hero-whistles-for-his-horse meme, it's just that me, my wife and her extended family can't agree on who it was. Do you know? And can you prove it?
Holy crap, city-boy. The first cowboy on TV/radio would've been the first to whistle for his horse, 'cause EVERY REAL COWBOY EVER FROM THE BEGINNING OF TIME did it.

Sheesh.

Dammit crash, I rode horses before I moved to the big city, you know. I even culled sick cows from a herd and pinned them between a gate and a fence so that they could be vaccinated - this involved getting off the horse, jumping down to the ground and running up BEHIND the cow which was now trapped facing into the angle formed by the gate and the fence, pressing against it so that it couldn't turn around, by the way.

My question still stands, albeit clarified - which TV/radio cowboy popularized this action in the popular culture? We can't agree around here, and I still don't think a valid answer is "they all did it!"

Isn't that just like a lawyer to argue a fact.
