What's the surprise here? Everything you do (or don't do) has a consquence. You make your choice(s) and live with the consequence(s). As (alleged) adults you know this. There's a difference between behaving like kids and having fun and behaving like assholes. #mefi has crossed that line.

For what it's worth, the few times I visited #mefi everyone was nice. This is really disappointing.

I came into #metachat after most of this shite went down (although Ryvar and loquacious were still yelling at quonsar for no clear reason). I'll weigh in briefly from a different and personal angle. It's been rough week at Chez Frisbee. The company that I work for lost a crucial client that I was slated to become one of the principal staff for and being a contract employee, that means I'm now temporarily screwed. Especially as I spent three months earlier this year laid out with mono and chronic fatigue, exhausting the financial buffer I had. A very good friend in Portland is not expected to survive through the week due to massive brain injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident.

Add to this that most of my friends here in the city are feverishly preparing for 'the Burn' and not wanting to rain on their parade as well as being functionally broke, means a lot of time at home, on the computer looking for jobs - again - and endless revisions of cover letters. I wouldn't mind this too much, but I'm tired, disappointed and feeling a bit bruised inside. I will barely make rent and if Mark dies I can't return for the funeral. It's hardly the worst I've experienced, but sucky nonetheless.

That said, MeCha and #metacha have wonderful this last week for being a place to hang out and distract, especially during the deeper hours of the night when thoughts tend to focus on troubles that loom large in the dark. Admittedly, I was probably relying a bit too much on the site and channel for entertainment and squishy comfort. And while it has been great for that, my lack of patience with the dynamics is, in my mind, a clear sign that I should step out at this point.

I'll likely poke my head in on occasion until things settle out. My email is in my profile and I respond promptly, should anyone want to drop a line and say, 'How-do'.

This one. I didn't read the u.n. owen page, assuming it would be pretty much truthful and what we already know. Is it really vicious? That whole thing with her makes me sad. There's lots of people like her in the world, I imagine that most don't really understand their own behavior. And a lot of us are more like her than we want to admit. if you'll notice, the un owen page itself is mostly just a compedium of hyperlinks, with the brief introduction. the purpose of the un owen page is not that of a random witch hunt, but rather to serve as a sort of public service warning to the community at large before they get scammed... i.e., if you send her money, you do so at your own peril, as she has hustled the mefi/mofi community, and other online communities, previously; etc. as well, i think the point of her wiki entry could be elegantly summarized by the following (mis)quote:

I think I sort of liked it because of what Freud claimed was an oral fixation. I dunno. People are weird--why can't people imagine that certain acts may or may not be pleasurable completely on their own terms and independent (for those who are capable of having that worldview) of whether it is homosexual or heterosexual? I moderately enjoyed some aspects of gay male sex, and fellatio for whatever reason was one of them. Otherwise, it didn't do much for me and all three times I tried I wasn't able to have an orgasm. I also have no sense of being able to be in love with another man. In contrast, I'm aware of how I'm sexually attracted to women all the time, and have been in love with a number of women and will again. I've been tremendously fascinated by how that comment of mine has taken on a life of its own and how people interpret it.

It's the inverse of the "Chasing Amy" thing where some people claimed that it made no sense that the character claimed to be a lesbian when she had sex with, and even fell in love with, a man. But lots of gay men have had a heterosexual relationship where they claim they were in love (but that it didn't work out in the long run), and lots of straight women have had a love affair with another woman.

My experience with people I've known is that their orientations are pretty definite although their experiences have been more varied.

For the record, my involvement in that wiki page was merely formatting -- I was complaining in the channel about how impossible it was to find anything, and since I'm a big Wikipedian now, I was teaching by showing. Frankly, I couldn't possibly have contributed, because I didn't care that much, and I've never have gone out and found any of that stuff, even if I'd had the time.

As for u.n., I've seen online charlatans come and go over the last 20 years, and u.n. pretty much dug her own grave. No pity here. The information is all public; the wiki just put it all in one place.

y2karl- There might be a little spite there, but that's largely because u.n. owen behaved like a goddamn grifter, and took mefi for a ride. She's also clearly a liar and a poseur, and she deserves all the acrimony she gets.

While you may like to take the high road, some people don't deserve it. I'm generally a nice person, but Owen is an asshole of the first order.
Also: way to judge a person on one criterion [compiling a list of links outing a liar and a cheat]; dhartung is an absolute gentleman and a pleasure to chat with.

Collecting and posting selections of everything someone has said online in any forum on any topic, even when the information is about personal topics not germane to any possible grifting is full of malice. Did you see what she said about her boyfriends over here ? What a lying bitch! Heheheheh. It really seems like an attempt at Total Humiliation. If the fine should fit the crime, that's way over the line. Public information or not, it's a really creepy thing to see much effort put into something so incredibly spiteful. Just because it can be done is no excuse for doing it.
