MeFi is so '50's sweetie!

Actually, HHI was not a tourist destination in the 50s. It wasn't until then that the bridge from the mainland was built and the place started to get developed as a resort area. It seemed rather "corporate" at first- we were staying at my brother's Marriott-developed timeshare- but the longer I stayed, the more I could envision staying there forever. There's an oligarchy of sorts- the island is set up with a master plan that ensures a lot of the island will stay undeveloped. In those areas that are developed, the corporate giants try to squeeze every last use out of the land. So you see stunningly beautiful resorts and.... 50-year-old mobile homes. All-in-all, though, a very pleasant place.
