I got on to IRC once. I can't remember how it happened. What do I do in OS X?

I'm not sure about Macs, but if you're on Firefox and have Chatzilla installed you should be able to just click the link.

Oh, sorry. Well if you have an IRC client like Trillian you can connect to one of the Efnet servers and then /join #metachat.

Well, I don't know what to tell you about the name problem (I'm a new IRC user myself) but once you're on Efnet all you should have to do is type /join #metachat.
