Walking Off the Fat, Across the Land :: This week, his 13th on the road, has been the hardest thus far for Steve Vaught, a 400-pound man trying to walk across America....
looking at the photo of fim walking, he doesn't look all that big, but I can't imagine walking in 102 degree weather is a good idea for anyone. I managed to get ill once (flu? something else? I'll never know) during a heat wave without AC, and it was the closest I've come to believing I might actually die.
Anyway. I wish him the best, but (On Wednesday, he remained deeply concerned about his ability to cover a 25-mile stretch of uninhabited desert), damn, I think this might have been better planned. Arizona in July? Did anyone read loquacious' earlier description of Arizona summers? (too lazy too dig for it, but... Oi.)
ps: anastasiav, you've been called out by me on the mecha user voices thread. *taps fingers impatiently*
I find this really inspiring. In a cheap way, maybe, but still.
No, walking across the desert in the summer certainly isn't the healthiest way to get healthy. But still, you've got to admire his determination. You've also got to admire his acknowledgement of the fact that the easy ways out are too tempting --- and usually not successful.
Good on him. I hope he makes it with no worse problems than lost toenails.
I have always always wanted to do this. I have planned routes and made equipment lists and tried out rigid training schedules. Unfortunately, I worry that a female walking all that way alone might be putting herself in a dangerous situation. Maybe I'm paranoid.
In any case, go Steve! I'll be rooting for him all the way.
LeeJay, when it's time to go, give me a call. I've always wanted to do it too. Together, we could take 'em. I'm half a badass, and I suspect you are too. So.
