Big Black's Songs About Fucking. Play it aloud, loud. Use it to drown out any residual jingoism and the picnics of those who get today off of work, too.
Kerosene. SET ME ON FIRE.

in general, someone is a thing of value if and only if he or she is willing to submit to whatever degradation and abuse is required to preserve that position. anything less betrays a lack of commitment.

Kerosene's not on Songs About Fucking, but the reference still makes me smile. Less than 24 hours ago I was rocking to an 80 minute mix of Big Black faves. Shellac, while decent, never grabbed me the way Big Black did.

"Atomizer" is a better record, though.

...and am I the only one who can't bring her/himself to pick up Rapeman's "Two Nuns and a Pack Mule"? Goddamn, I'm PC.

And, yeah, I know, it's the name of a japanese cartoon character, but still...

I recently threw Rapeman's killer version of "Just Got Paid" on a mix. The name made me uneasy at first, but eventually I caved. I remember seeing them referred to as "Rap Man" in a small town paper concert review, which made me laugh.

Now that I think about it, there isn't very much Babyland love here. "A Total Letdown"?

Ok, which band(s) in Our Band Could Be Your Life was NOT a staple of your youth?

Me: Mudhoney & Beat Happening

All of them.

Fugazi, Minor Threat, and Dino Jr are the only bands that didn't mean a lot to me back in the day. They had songs I liked, but there wasn't an emotional investment like I had with the Replacements, Big Black, Husker, and Mission of Burma. I'm glad I was of an age where I saw most of the bands in that book live at least once (Burma not until the reunion).

Ought to know what I liar I am
Ought to know me by now
Don't curse me for my nature
Don't blast me for my wrongs
Just a bad penny
I always come back to you
Just a bad penny
Just a bad penny
I always come back to you
Should have known you couldn't trust me
As far as you could throw me
You couldn't throw me to far
Just a bad penny
Couldn't throw me to far...
