Ads in RSS feeds How do y'all get rid of ads in RSS feeds? My old-fashioned solution is to un-sub from a feed that starts carrying ads, but that's whittling down my feeds to none..... Isn't there a way to adblock them by now?
....or is this worthy of askme? I have a knack of asking stuff there that gets no answers at all... weird talent.;) this mihgt just be such a Q, and here we can at least derail the post and chat instead.

I hate ads.

but that dictates a lot of my "surfing"

mine too, I avoid ad-littered sites when they (the adss that is) reach some invisable level of "too frickin' much". Then I desert the site and if I still fancy it, I try reading the RSS only.

Now that RSS carries ads I'm dumping lots of feeds. Gaah! There's no escape!

Actually it wouldn't be so bad if the ads were relevant, I don't think, but they usually aren't.

it would be nice if something on your own computer said "yes, i've seen enough crap already" or "i'm all cookied out"

for now it's just my eye strain

is there a better word than surfing yet? it's still apt but old.

Only vaguely related, has anyone else noticed an odd behavious with Google in regards to search results and "premature cookie-release"? I have to approve every cookie fed to my browser (this'll make you ahte ad-littered site like nothing else) and have noticed that when I search on anything at all on Google, and get the returned results, as I'm reading them, the top or second result-website will send me a cookie! But I have no clicked on their site yet and may not ever visit their site. What gives? That's pretty weird me reckons.

apparently when you use google in firefox it will prefetch the first search result. maybe thats causing it.

Not sure if it will work in RSS feeds, but have you tried Mike's Ad Blocking Host File? Mike is skallas on MeFi. I use it at home and it removes most ads with no pain or fuss - as long as you don't mind little boxes with 404 errors in them, which just serves to remind you how many ads you are not seeing and, after a while, I found that I hardly notice the error messages anyway.

pandaharma - it depends on the feed really, but 90% of them are ads. That is, the feed serves only a headline and a lead-in, not the entire posting. It's an ad to tempt me to visit the page and read more.
To put an ad in that is like putting a cake on top of a cake (to mangle a Swedish idiom).

dg, I'll give Mike's file a go, looks great thanks.
