What's on your desktop? I'll show you mine if you show me yours.
That's what's on my computer here at work.

vacant black. like my soul.

I'm too ashamed. I have three instances of VB6 running. And two instances of Visual Studio.NET. And Visual SourceSafe.

From a once-proud developer.
posted by veedubya 07 June | 12:46
How did you do that? I think I would have to take a picture & upload it to flickr, but I know that this is not the geek way. Besides, does anyone want to see a picture of my son flanked by a bunch of downloaded fonts & pdfs I haven't got around to dumping yet?

Here's mine.

She's hot. Or hawt, if you prefer.

Scarily messy at the moment.
And that's just desktop 1...

On a PC, MGL? Alt/print screen. Use a graphics program (I use PSP7) to make it a jpg or gif or whatever flickr requires and upload.

These are freaking awesome. And I never knew about ALT/print scrn either! I've been doing screen captures with my graphics program, but ALT/print scrn is so much easier...geez.

Carter - not me. I can't stand a busy desktop, even though I used to make icons and had an icon site. I keep it as uncluttered as possible, which is why I'm so fascinated by seanyboy's desktop right now! Also, andrewcooke, I really like your icons. I think I might have to make some more...getting inspired here. These are all great, especially the ones with personal photographs on them. Bee-oo-tee-ful...
posted by iconomy 07 June | 13:20
seanyboy, what do you have in your "Voluptous" folder?
posted by mr.marx 07 June | 13:21
I cleaned up and arranged my link icons, because it was messy and you couldn't see the pretty picture, but I had been meaning to sort them for a while anyway.

For anyone running XP that wants to get rid of those little diagonal "short cut" arrows on their icons, download Tweak UI from the Power Toys collection. You can get rid of the arrows and do all kinds of fun little things with it, in an easy to use interface. I know...most people could care less about the arrows, but I like to see the whole icon, if I have to look at it.

More tired minimalism. Actually a pixellated Hood album cover. A file-strewn desktop makes me crazy.

"Are you tidying these up before you show them?"

Yeah, I consolidated some files and folders into "stuff". I don't like a cluttered desktop, but I do tend to accumulate, say, seven or eight things before I clear them out. I have a seperate partition that I use for data and whatnot. I always reassign the "My Documents" folder to one over there, and that's where stuff gets first-pass organized. Maybe. That tree normally just grows beyond all reason.
posted by kmellis 07 June | 13:51
"Are you tidying these up before you show them?"

no. I use yzdock to launch programs/folders and a special folder for downloaded stuff. shit all over the desktop kills me.

yeah, that one's going in the glossary
posted by dodgygeezer 07 June | 14:08
Yes, I left that folder out because I knew if anyone recognized it they would get a kick out of it. I have yet to find a lukewarm fan.

(What do you think of the newest? I've only listened a couple of times, but given the more (truly) autobiographical nature of the material, I find it strangely unaffecting. The earlier fictions are somehow more emotionally honest to me. (And this isn't just a function of production values. I love Talahassee and We Shall All Be Healed.)
posted by omiewise 07 June | 14:10
naxocensored would be a great Metafilter injoke if the site worked any more.

omiewise, earlier kenko and another someone had a bit to offer somewhere else on metachat about the new stuff since I haven't heard it on album yet. (can you believe!?!) but I'm listening to The Coroner's Gambit right now since seeing your folder. Saw them a couple of weeks ago and it was fabulous.

Here's my home desktop, much messier...I was sifting through some mp3s for the mix swap and I piled them all on top of each other to muddy up the names a bit. Just in case anyone wants to be surprised. I can't remember where I found the photograph, but the cat ears made me laugh.
posted by iconomy 07 June | 20:23
Can't claim credit - it was stolen from the talented PointlessWasteOfTime folks. There's a couple of other good ones on there. I too am perplexed by "Disappearing Toaster".

There's some great potential band names on there, though. Someone remember "Brown-eyed Earl" and "Fuck Knuckles" for the next AskMe name-my-band thread.

Come to think of it, I think jonmc was telling us earlier that he's got the Rump Humpers' original album. In mono.
posted by blag 07 June | 21:03
This is mine, without any tidying. My dock is rather sparse right now because this is a new computer. The background is a scan (obtained from elsewhere) of artwork in the booklet accompanying Radiohead's Kid A. I have no real idea why photoshop is highlighted.
