Down down down Mefi died in the middle of a post :(
It's just dumb that Mefi is so broken. There are a zillion possible ways to solve the problem and Matt hasn't really done anything.
There are three or four codebases out there that would make a good starting point. Metafilter is very simple functionally -- I can't figure out why Matt is so reluctant to start developing an alternative. There are plenty of us users who would be happy to lend a hand with the implementation, I'm sure.
killdevil. Well, it is his site. But, I suppose if I'd paid $5 for an account I might get a little pissed too. (I got in before they started charging)
I think some progress is being made. In fact earlier today I read a post in MeTa indicating that some of the code had been optimized and that bit would be implemented soon.
OTOH, at the very least some more hardware could be thrown at the situation.

you a "friend" of his? i got the impression from his last post that he is doing stuff. and it's not clear to me what "the problem" is, in detail, anyway. so where are you pulling your information from?

you a "friend" of his? Matt's been saying crap like that for years now. Why do you think quonsar mocks him mercilessly every time he pulls that "I'm working on it" gag? (Other than that q mocks everything mercilessly, I mean.) I have nothing against cutting the guy some slack, he's a new father and all, but it's ridiculous to expect us to go "Oh, you're working on it!" and sit back satisfied.

he constantly gives that impression. note in the meta thread how he's been talking about mefi pro since 2001. he's been talking about coldfusion experts since a year ago. anything he says about improving the site can be safely jeered at. metatalk and askme are just clones of mefi with some bits tacked on here and there (resulting in 3 seperate codebases).
languagehat, quonsar - fair enough and all, but the number of changes we've seen in the past year have been pretty significant (AskMe, $5 buy-in, tags, flags...) so I'm more willing to believe him when he says he's working on it these days.
there's clearly code change going on - there was an error earlier today that was obviously down to new code (which surprised me, til i read his comment).
yes, he says all the time that there's "going to be stuff" and no one (rightly) believes this. but today he said that he changed code (past tense). as far as i know, when he talks about things as if they have happened, they have.
i'm as pissed off as anyone with the downtime. but back-seat drivers proclaiming that they could do better piss me off too. start your own fucking site if you feel like that - fact is, matt did/does something right. something that most coders don't understand. they think it's all code. matt's living proof that it's not (christ, if there's one thing he is, it's proof that coding abaility isn't important).
fucking engineers and fucking scientists. you're too fucking anal about the fucking technical details. there's more than that here. and this fine bottle of morenita i have beside me agrees.
the cock in EB's mouth: Not amusing. Not even your joke. I recommend trying to let your little head think for your big head, since it's obviously not working out the other way around.
Where will it end? Next it'll be the cock in the cock in EB's mouth's ass and then it'll be the cock in the cock in the cock in EB's mouth's ass's nose and then it'll be the cock in the cock in the cock in the cock in EB's mouth's ass's nose's ear hole.
Can't we all just get along without putting cocks in each other orifices unless it's on a consensual basis within a loving relationship of mutual respect. Or something.
