Best Memorial Day MeFi Meltdown More MeFi roadkill. I almost feel bad about participating in the pile-on. Almost.
i love alex's mwah!

i feel bad for him--he was hardly a member. what happened?

I dunno. I got piled on when I started. I hung around. Now I get mostly ignored, which is the best I can hope for. I'm not a MeFi superstar like you or scarabic. But I hang in there. I think if Drakepool hangs around, he'll live it down. I hope he does. (Okay, now I feel bad about piling on.)

Reading that reminded me of a scene from Liar's Poker. Michael Lewis is a new associate at the investment bank Salomon Brothers and he describes how he fared introducing himself to some of the traders (following from memory can not find my copy!):

Most traders were polite and if you walked up to them and introduced yourself they would simply ignore you.

Occasionally you would step on a land mine.

Lewis: Hi, I'm Mike L-

Trader: What? Who the fuck are you?

Lewis: Uh, I'm a new associate-

Trader: Ken, Tommy! Take a look at the suspenders on this asshole. Jesus Christ, good luck pal.

I guess it is best to (try) to maintain a low profile when you are a rookie.

Yeah, I stepped on a landmine not long after joining, but got over it and, like Doohickie, now find pleasure in near-anonymity. If you have a skin made of gossamer, MeFi is not the place for you to play.

Off topic: DodgyGeezer, why can't we have the strike tag? Surely we can't abuse that too much? Pleeeese?

I pine for the line break (br) tag, myself.....

Yeah, I like a.r.'s "Mwah", too. Wish I knew how he did it.

That whole (MeTa) thing was odd. Y2Karl had only refuted the information in the post, and hardly addressed the poster at all, so I just don't see the hurt feelings there. One other poster gently suggested that drakepool not mother-hen the thread so much. So, altogether (by MeFi standards at least), almost a make-out session. "M'wah" pretty much sums it up.

I'll sort this out, I just haven't had a chance to yet.

maybe a dramatic way to retire a sockpuppet?

mlis- That was pretty much my first day on MeFi. Except it was pancakes instead of suspenders.

That thread was great. If there were an Internet Thread Hall of Fame, that ought to be in it. It's too bad that Drakepool really did leave, though.

assumptions always seem so much more telling of the assumptors than the subject

life and perception
it's all in the editing
but the conclusions people get to
and how loathe they are to leave that place
once they've arrived--
*shakes head*
