Quonsar - So he has a reputation as a "metafilter terrorist" and some say he has a "withered, blackened soul". Yet he gave me CSS advice in MeTa once and was helpful via IM. I think he is just misunderstood and needs a hug. Group hug, everyone?
Dude, I'm not hugging that - it might be be catching....

*shakes quonsar's hands*

btw I have found him to be extremely polite and helpful via private communication, too

I hugged quonsar once, and now I'm really very phlegmy - I would advise against.

(kidding, of course. *coughs*)

Hope you don't mind, mlis, that I kind of fixed your post - it's just a visual thing; I'll put it back as it was if you want.

Actually, which d***a q***n said quonsar had a "withered blackened soul"?

A little mischief hardly makes him the prince of fucking darkness.

Seriously, I'm curious.

*hugs taz, unafraid of the leftover phlegm*

re: "withered blackened soul"

A soul in tatters
A soul as black as coal
I hope, I hope
I wish you could find what matters
Through the streets and on your own
Almost lost and almost home
We'll be looking all we can
We'll be looking for the sulphur man

taz: looks good :)

damn you, matteo! I was moved to post the following in regard to this comment by Q in the once-good/now-bad thread, but restrained myself. Now you make me wanna do it all over again...

Happy spark of heavenly flame!
Pride and wonder of man's frame!
Why is pleasure so soon flying?
Why so short this bliss of dying?
Cease, fond pego, cease the strife,
And yet indulge a moment's life.

(first stanza of) The Dying Lover, to his Prick, ca. 1700

Yep, some guy talking to his prick, poetically. (and how often does that happen, really? Surely not more than two or three times a day?)

I think quonsar is quite lovable. I don't know what all this mefi-terrorist crap is all about. His so-called "snarks" are always spot on and observent. He's made me laugh out loud more than anyone else on mefi.

It seems that many of you just don't understand Quonsar The Magnificent.

No fert. No burf.

Well, the basic rap on q is that he's settled into the role of a likable curmudgeon, which I think works quite well too, but that hasn't always been the case. He's also usually the first to admit that, as well.

Remember that evidence of any really egregious behavior is pretty quickly cleaned up, so all that's left are impressions of the times that he--or anyone else--has skirted the line without crossing it. Anyone who regularly tramples back and forth across the line can end up looking like someone who just flirts with being a jerk, after the fact.

My basic impression has always been that he--or at least his online persona--has conquered some personal demons that really caused him to lash out pretty viciously at times, and that it also took him a while to find the right balance of snark and civility that comes across as "likable curmudgeon".

Now, though, I think he's pretty funny.

I made a joke about Yes once that quonsar told me he liked. So he's okay in my book.
posted by PinkStainlessTail 20 May | 11:58
PST, q loves Yes.
Little known fact: All the 'Yes' album covers are quonsar family photos.

Other little known facts:
- If you drop a phonograph needle on quonsar's nipple it plays the Beach Boys' Pet Sounds.

- quonsar likes to hunt. This one time, quonsar decided he's going to hunt down all four of the 'Banana Splits.' He stalked and killed every one of them with a machete. They all begged for their lives except Flegal.

terrorist? I never would have thought so. Heck, in threads I have no interest in, and nothing to say, I'll sometimes search for comments from quonsar because I know they'll be worth reading.

quonsar, maybe you could swallow next time.

quonsar takes as good as he gives. Which is why he's so damn popular.

I can vouch for the fact that quonsar does not have a "withered, blackened soul", although it may be a little over-cooked for some people. Like dozens of us, he has been through life's blender on high, yet, amazingly, he has remained chunky and not thoroughly pureed. He appears to be torn right now between his instinctive libertarian anarchist objection to heavier moderation at MeFi and the fact that most of the newbies who try to emulate him are so so bad at it (IMO, comparable to the kind of people who call a C-SPAN show to hear themselves yell out Howard Stern's name).

However, his shameless flirtation with scody after she specifically gave ME a shoutout at the L.A. Meetup will not be tolerated. IT IS ON, Q-BREATH!
posted by wendell 20 May | 18:36
Certainly not withered and/or blackened, but perhaps well-lived-in would be a better description. quonsar often cuts right tot he heart of the matter when others are too timid to do so and his comments, while sometimes hurtful to the target, are generally more accurate than we like to admit.

Is it just me who thinks it is weird to disect the soul of an on-line personality without any question that a personality that only exists as 1s and 0s has a soul in the first place?

Quonsar, in case anyone was still unclear on this, is not a light-hearted gadfly but a black-hearted, withered-souled, middle-aged asshole!

Although I don't agree with everything he says or does on MeFi, quonsar has proven himself to be a friend in good times and bad. He has said wonderful things (in case you missed them) about his wife, daughter and grandchild in MeFi from time to time. He will be the first to lend a hand if you have a question he can answer. I've said it before and I'll say it again: I ♥ quonsar.
