Friday Lyrics Challenge [More:]

Name that tune!

1. The gifts of the spirit shall not be squandered on one man

2. Baby, shake that thing now

3. I punched him dead in his eye

4. In flies a guy who's all dressed up like a Union Jack

5. Tomorrow, just you wait and see

6. Dich sah ich und die milde Freude floß von dem süßen Blick auf mich

7. I'm droppin' shit like a pigeon

8. The alias that you've been living under

9. This lifeless lifeline

10. You done stole my Stetson hat
4. Get Off Of My Cloud - Rolling Stones. . .

Hints for the remaining lyrics:

1. The gifts of the spirit shall not be squandered on one man
Everything was mine but it's long stripped away
Will you love me if I'm naked or I'm silent as a grave

2. Whoa, shake that thing now
Baby, shake that thing now now
   Baby, shake that thing

3. Since he was with his boys he tried to break fly
I punched him dead in his eye
and said, "Who you callin' a bitch?"

6. Dich sah ich und die milde Freude floß von dem süßen Blick auf mich,
Ganz war mein Herz an deiner Seite, und jeder Atemzug für dich.

7. My voice excels from the avenue to jail cells
I'm droppin' shit like a pigeon
I hope you're listening, smackin' babies at they christening

9. If I could throw this lifeless lifeline to the wind

10. "What I care about your little babies, your darlin' lovin' wife?
You done stole my Stetson hat, I'm bound to take your life"

Ha. Nr 6: I did recognise those lyrics as romantic Lieder; so typical. But had to google for the exact song.
Tx for reminding me. I'm playing more songs like that right now.

Hugh I shared some Schubert music with you through the yahoo address in your profile. No idea whether you still read that.

Awesome, jouke, thanks! I was thinking of using "Erlkönig," which might have been more recognizable, but the lyrics are so creepy! So I went with "Wilkommen und Abscheid," music by Schubert, words by Goethe.

I'm excited to listen to these recordings you sent. I have all the Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau Schubert lieder, which are amazing. Particularly the 1962 recording of Die Winterreise with Gerald Moore on piano. They have such a rapport. Looking forward to hearing the Quasthoff. Thanks again!

Regarding the lyrics challenge, I'll give answers sometime this afternoon, to give people more time to solve them. I tried to use mostly familiar songs; in one case, the song may be too familiar.

I hope some more people give it a shot.

Hm. I should give Fischer-Dieskau another chance. I once checked his singing out and found it less dramatic, less expressive than Quasthoff. But that's a long time ago. Maybe I got it wrong.

I love Erlkönig. I often sing it; trying to imbue different character to the parts of the insouciant reassuring father, the pleading anxious son and the seductive evil Erlkönig. It's just a perfect song: the arc of the tale. The phrasing of the poem by Goethe. The amazing interplay between the tension building piano and the singer...
And I do enjoy Thomas Quasthoffs rendition that I linked to.

sings
Gefrorne Tränen tropfen, von meinen Wangen ab.
Ob es mir denn entgangen, daß ich geweinet hab..
