I haven't watched it — after the two strikes of its "Yellow Peril" episode (series 1) and then its disastrous treatment of Irene Adler (series 2), I'm hesitant. But it wouldn't surprise me. A number of critics pointed out that they've used up some of the heaviest hitters in the Holmes canon: Baskervilles, Scandal, Reichenbach/The Final Problem.

I can't disagree with anything you've said, Thorzdad, and yet I loved it all the same. I mean, the explanation for the locked-room puzzle in the second episode is absolutely ridiculous. But still, that whole wedding party scene was so much fun ...

I think I've just come to the conclusion that I'm predisposed to love anything Who- or Sherlock-related, and am probably never going to be a good arbiter of taste when it comes to them.

It is a week offering. I mostly enjoyed the first two seasons despite the issues Eide brings up but the first two shows this go round seemed to be written stickily to please fandom with their own in-jokes and the major change to the third story alters it's meaning in a way that changes both Holmes and the woman at the centre of the story. I'm not really caring about another season.

I've only seen the first episode of season 3 but yeah, it was a little slight.

I think the reviewers basically agree with you. I liked the second episode which actually had some interesting mysteries which locked together well.

The other two didn't really seem to have any decent mysteries, and tried to substitute grandiose plots instead.

I think what we really care about is an interesting mystery and a creative solution. There doesn't have to be a huge amount at stake: the end of the world, a bomb about to explode, major characters about to be killed off (especially when you know they wont' be). It could be a widow who's had a wedding ring stolen, if a tear rolls down her cheek at the right moment and there's something interesting about the problem and solution.

Yeah, TE, Holmes has always been about the mystery, not the stakes. A good treatment of his character would reflect that; a great one would highlight it.

We made it through the first five minutes of the first episode and canceled our DVR recording. (I missed the first seasons.) Oh please. This is just not the Sherlock Holmes I have loved since I read the books.
