13 April 2013

Some sad/some happy/some help name this new dog. It is with much sadness that I announce that my beloved dog Lulu passed away at the beginning of March. Mecha helped me name her. [More:]

Lulu

It is with much happiness that I announce I got a new rescue dog today.

new dog

I need a little bit of help naming the new guy. Black pug (most likely actually a Pug/Boston Terrier mix since he's got some white on his chest and on a couple of his feet and his tail end is brindle) - he's two years old, has been super freaking awesome all day, likes squeaky toys and lazing about whatever room I'm in. He also really likes my other dog, Binky. Best $83 I've spent in a while (county shelter dog.)

Names I'm considering for the new guy right now:
Neville (like this name but it doesn't fit him as well as I'd like)
Moses
Carrot (character from Discworld)

Looking for suggestions for other awesome names either from HP, Discworld, or wherever. I would prefer two syllable names but that's kind of flexible in my mind.
Gene Simmons is my first reaction. But no. Maybe I can come up with something better later. Cute dog. Wish you both well.

Simmons actually was considered. It just doesn't fit this dog. He's super happy go lucky and pug prance-y.

Don't know why, but that is a Seymour to me.

(sorry to hear about Lulu)

sorry about Lulu, glad to hear your 'rebound dog' is looking good (I had a rebound dog who didn't, years ago)

a black pug cute as a bug... Bugsy? (after all, he is an honorary Bunnie)

based on his dominant color, you could call him Decker (get it, Black & Decker? good for energetic but handle-able)

or Eb (for Ebony)
or Bert (for the chimney sweep played by Dick Van Dyke in Mary Poppins)
or Nibbler (for the little alien animal in Futurama)
or Lister (from Red Dwarf... am I getting too nerdy?)

If Neville's not quite right, you could give him the first name of one of Neville Brothers, Aaron, Art, Cyril or Ivan (yep, those are all the brothers, their parents must've been entertainingly random)

There's some fun in other seemingly upper-crust-British names, like Rupert, Clive, Nigel (from XTC's 80s song "Making Plans for Nigel") or what I named my childhood dog, a basset puppy: Farnswoth. And don't forget Alfie!

Of course, I'm not actively using Wendell anymore, you can have it...

I am overthinking this bowl of kibble... enjoy your new doggie!

I like oneswelfoop's suggestion of Bert, but I'd lengthen it to Bertie (dogs respond to two-syllable names best, I've read somewhere).

You could give your dog a name nobody can pronounce: Gijsbrecht. Both the ij vowel and the ch consonant are a challenge for English speakers.
It's the Dutch equivalent of Gisbert.

You know, as much as i didn't care for my previous employer, I loved the name of the black pug who came to the office: Rio Bravo.

Gilbert or Cyril.
Maybe Flansberg or Farnsworth.

Gus? Gussie? Gusbert?

Kimstein? Leeberg? Beuller?

Norbert(a) was the name of the baby dragon Hagrid had to give up.

I'm sorry about Lulu.

BUSTER. His name is Buster.

looks like a Monty to me

oh yes, Bertie and Binky would make an awesome pair. Plus, Bertie Wooster! One of my favorite old Masterpiece Theatre series from the early 90s :)

N is for Neville who died of ennui.

Doogie, as in Houser. I like Bert/ Bertie, which makes me think of Ernie, or Ernest (Hemingway-McBarkerson) which I also like. Bueller is a great dog name (Bueller? Anyone?) as is Gus, Guster, Gussie. There's a character from Wodehouse named Gussie Fink-Nottle. Pretty much all Wodehouse names are the bomb. Cyril is also good.

I'm so sorry about Lulu, and so happy you have a new dog; shelter dogs are the best; you have done a Good Thing.

Glad your new dog is awesome!

I am so sorry about Lulu. Your new dog is adorable. I've always liked Winston as a name for a dog (I have a human friend named Neville)

Beans or Beanie, as in Boston Baked. Sounds lots like Binky, though. Cute fella! Sorry for your loss. Brahmin? Some kind of Kennedy name? Ted? John John?

I considered Bertie early on but it doesn't fit him. I also considered Gus but there are so very many dogs out there named Gus (I groom dogs and this name is pretty popular in my area right now.) Jeeves almost fits the dog but not quite.

Right now I'm considering Carrot, Archie, Bunny, Kermit. I am likely going to nickname him Super Fly.

Thanks for the help and condolences!

He kind of looks like a Frankie to me. Can't say why. If he was a she, I'd say Gretchen. Maybe Gary? Adorable doggie in any case, by any name. We may have to move one of these days so Jon can have a dog. I like dogs, but he wants one in the worst way. We both are in love with the Boston Terrier, Manneaux, on Swamp People. You gotta love a dog that's not afraid of alligators.

Maybe August? Works with Augie and Gus...
