Dire Straits' "Romeo & Juliet" video is an amazing bit of early 80s film-making. It's like Man Ray and Robert Palmer had a baby. [More:] I'm not sure how you make something simultaneously bizarrely literal and abstract, but there you go.

I woke up with an alternative-universe version of the song in my head (it had a happy ending!), so I looked it up this morning. I am charmed.
I love this song and had no idea there was a video for it. I'm almost afraid to watch.

I was about your age when this song first came out, young lady. :-) Making Movies is my favorite Dire Straits album.

I was in highschool when this came out. Great album with the exception of the last track "Les Boys"

Yeah. Les Boys is borderline homophobic. But then he mentions "faggots" on a subsequent album.

I have to admit, I first learned of the song from the Indigo Girls' cover.

"Skateaway" is another cool video, for a song from the same album. Looks like they were probably directed by the same people.

Don't be afraid to watch...I always loved, loved, loved, loved, LOVED this masterpiece of a song, and the video worked for me.

By the way, did I say I always loved this song? (and most of that amazing album too). One of the very few albums I bought with my limited funds, back in the day.

Aw. This was my first ever "favorite song". I think I was like 5 or so when it came out.

Oh, yeah, I certainly did not mean to imply that the video was bad. It is seriously awesome.

I had a roommate who played this song constantly for weeks when was dumped by her boyfriend. I hate it.

Making Movies is a wonderful album. Luckily Les Boys was the last song so you could skip it.

This video doesn't work for me. I mean it's probably okay, but it doesn't match the movie I made in my head for it.

I don't understand the top comment on it Karen B, still wish it was you, 25 years on, you're still the one! Anyone know? This album sort of hit when I was in jr high or high school and Dire Straits was the first CD my dad got for the first CD player we had which must have been in the late seventies. Total flashback.
