December Musical Giftstravaganza, Day 6 comes to us from my favorite band, Big Star. →[More:] Singer Alex Chilton wasn't the religious type, and legend has it that he wrote the lyrics of this song by lifting phrases out of a hymnal (hoping to impress a preacher's daughter he was interested in).

Regardless, the 1978 song "Jesus Christ" turned out to be a lovely, catchy pop song, as you can hear from this terrific acoustic demo featuring just Chilton and his guitar. The final album version is also great and a little more bonkers, complete with sleigh bells, kettle drums, backup singers and a sax solo.
