Summertime Corn Question Inside: [More:]

This is one of those questions like the toilet paper question (which way does the paper hang?). So which way do you eat corn on the cob? The horizontal method where you eat from end to end, or the circular method where you eat around the cob? And why is your method better?

(And, do those corn silk removers really work?)
Typewriter style, end to end!

End to End . That way i can pretend that I am an old fashioned typewriter and make a *ding* when I finish each row and move back and down to the next row lol

Circular, because it seems less efficient, and I agree with Miss Manners that efficiency in food consumption is not desirable.

Typewriter style.

What's are corn silk removers?
posted by arse_hat 29 June | 11:15
Circular. It never occurred to me there were other choices.

There are several simple but absolutely iron rules:

1. The corn is as fresh as possible, preferably just pulled from the stalk.

2. Immediately after husking, the ear goes in a pot of boiling water for exactly 5 minutes.

3. The corn is then eaten typewriter style, without any pollution by butter, salt, or other additives.

And the best husker and corn silk remover is your fingers.

Definitely typewriter style, dripping in butter and salt

Y'know, I was all set to answer this question and then I went to type and realized I don't actually know off the top of my head.

So I'm sitting in my office miming eating corn right now.

Pretty sure I do circular, or spiral, but I've never had a problem with efficiency. It's the direction my jaws push the corn in anyway so I go with it, and just slowly slide over to the other end as you go.

No butter, maybe a little salt and pepper if I can get it to stick.

Oh, and I'm typewriter style, while my wife is circular style.

In a spiral.

I tend to eat by the lengthwise row, but in two-bite heights: at the end of the row, I bite, then bite again higher, then move down the row and repeat until I get to the end. Then the whole ear rotates so another two-bite-high lengthwise row is facing me.

Wow, I didn't realize my process was so involved until just now.

I eat mine Cookie Monster style.

The veriety I grow (which I can't recommend enough) produces little cobs, about 1/2 the size you get with the tasteless supermarket kind. They are perfect for woofing down without any for-thought or design toward consumption.

Typewriter style over here, as well. Always buttered, sometimes with just salt, sometimes salt and pepper. Sometimes even garlic salt or seasoned salt. We had corn on the cob this evening for dinner so it's fresh in my mind.

typewriter and butter here. No salt. So good.
posted by gaspode 29 June | 19:17
Circular. I also take the husks off one at a time.No one ever complained.

In my corn eating days* it was similar to Elsa's style. Dripping with butter and salt, of course.

*Pre-braces. For whatever reason I've never gone back to eating corn on the cob after I got them removed.
posted by deborah 29 June | 23:00
deborah, one of my happiest memories after braces was getting to eat apples and corn on the cob again. My bottom teeth had been so crooked that eating those things ripped my gums up pretty badly. So, the first apples and corn after doing my time in retainers was just magical. "Oh! I can actually eat this again!"

Buttery typewriter style bliss.

Is "typewriter style" something we all just picked up here from TPS, or is it a common expression?

Because I'd never thought of it as "typewriter style" before, and I love it. Ding! Zzzzip.

Paint generously with soy sauce. Slather over butter at the end. Nom wildly.

Typewriter-style is an old Looney-Toons gag.

Salt, pepper, circular.

Anyone else ever hear of drinking the corn water like tea? I don't do this personally, but maybe I should try.
