People who like grapefruit juice...→[More:]Do they think it's bitter, but they like it anyway? Do they like it because it's so bitter? Or do they think it's sweet, like any other kind of fruit juice?
I prefer to think of grapefruits and their juice as pleasantly tart. When I'm feeling a cold coming on, I'll drink half a bottle of grapefruit juice in a work day. Otherwise, I'll go through a bottle in 3-4 days. I don't understand adding sugar to sliced grapefruit, you're ruining something delicious.
Yet I prefer sweet to savory most other circumstances. Today I had grits with a dollop of honey, whereas my wife adds salt and pepper to hers, which sounds odd to me. I add brown sugar to cooked acorn squash.
I like fresh-squeezed grapefruit juice because its tartness is balanced juuuust between bitterness and sweetness. But I don't usually like storebought grapefruit juice, which seems like it's missing some --- I dunno, spark of freshness and brightness.
But I came to grapefruit only recently: I never ever liked it until a couple of years ago, when I was given a bag of fancy grapefruits for Christmas and discovered that hey, I like 'em!
This year, I saved the rinds and candied them. Now THAT is a crazy combination of sweet and bitter. It makes my whole mouth tingle, not entirely in a nice way.
And OH MY GOSH this fantastic blueberry liqueur I made (blueberry-infused vodka mixed with blueberry simple syrup) is amaaaaaaazing with grapefruit juice and a splash of seltzer. I think it's time for a tiny cocktail, okbyenow.
I taste it as slightly bitter but really sort of great when you're having something that is really savory, like it's a palate cleanser. I also like the other grapefruit flavored soda things like Fresca and the like.
The pink grapefruit juice is especially nice. A bit less tart/bitter. I love that pucker quality. Very refreshing.
It can interact with my blood pressure medication, apparently, but it only makes it lower my pressure more, so, in my case, that's a bonus (never had a problem).
