Last night's MadMen: Discuss... (potential spoilers, I suppose) →[More:]One of the themes of last night's MadMed seemed to be highlighting how out-of-touch Don has become in regards to the changing culture around him. Music, of course, was the tool used to expose Don's encroaching decrepitude. His team's discussion of what music to use in an ad and Don's "I have no idea what you are talking about" look spoke volumes as to how far behind Don has become...which is death to a creative director.
I enjoyed the piece where Megan hands Don a copy of
Rubber Soul as a guide to "what's going on". She points to the track list and suggest he start with "that one." That introduced a nice bit of drama as those familiar with
Rubber Soul are now wondering which cut Megan has chosen as Don's introduction to these changing times. Her choice made me love her character even more. Spot-on perfect. As I watched Don settle into his Eames, I could only imagine the mind-fuck he was experiencing listening to the cut in light of all that transpired in this episode. That he cuts it short was interesting. Rejection of change? "OK, I get it"?
Also interesting was the interplay of Peggy with Don at the Cool-Whip labs. When put into the position of "being" Don's wife, Peggy finds her voice and pulls no punches. Suddenly, all the women in Don's life (including his daughter) have grown beyond him.
And, then, there was Don's elevator "down".
I'm really enjoying the way this season is shaping-up.
