Is it me or is a "hit and run" used an awful lot in fictional works? [More:]I'm reading a book where the main plot device is an accidental hit-and-run. It's going to be the downfall of at least one of the main characters. I feel like this happens a lot in books and movies.

I'm worried that it's going to be my downfall too. I don't even drive that often. And even if I don't run, it's still going to be terrible.

I just should turn myself in now. :(

"just should"? Damnit, I can't write with all this guilt!

An accidental hit and run drips with possible dramas, but starting a story with one is fairly trite. A writer has mastered the craft when s/he can effectively use one in the middle or at the end of a story, without making it seem like deus ex machina.

Bonfire of the Vanities starts with one, sorta.

Woeld-saving wizard or no, I'll still never forgive Harry Potter for that pedestrian he wiped out with his broom.
