the fact that I hadn't seen this yet..→[More:]
Means I really have been too out of the loop. Wow. I didn't even know this was being made. Want to see this right now.
I read some time ago that Scott was working on an "Alien" prequel, but I didn't know he'd finished it. Wow, that looks interesting. (I'm a big fan of "Alien.")
The original Alien trailer is one of the best (and scariest) ever made. I love that the new trailer uses that same screeching sound in the background. I'm impressed at the cast although it's hard to beat the cast of Alien. Seriously: Tom Skerritt, Sigourney Weaver, Veronica Cartwright, Harry Dean Stanton, John Hurt, Ian Holm and Yaphet Kotto?
I had forgotten that the extraordinary (and until recently, criminally overlooked) Idris Elba was in Prometheus until he appeared in the trailer, at which point I remembered why I had been SO VERY EXCITED about this flick months ago. (Also, Alien is a favorite of mine, so I'm hesitantly hopeful that this will have some of the same magic.)
After "The Wire," I was so discouraged by how many of the series' very fine black actors dropped back off the map when they should have been headed for stardom. For a while, I made a half-hearted effort to watch some of Idris Elba's films, but too many of them were just plain awful, or he was only in them for a few lines.
There's no reason for this guy not to be an enormous international star: fantastic actor, strikingly handsome, great range, and comedy chops to boot. I really hope that's finally happening for him.
I'm prepared for disappointment but this movie could be half as good as the first Alien was and it would still be the best sci-fi movie I have seen in years so I am just going to try to go in with reasonable expectations.
At least it is almost guaranteed to be visually impressive from start to finish. I am tempted to try to see it in a 3D theater but I think the closest one is 2 hours away so not sure if I can bother to do that. Maybe if I see it and I am blown away, then I'll go to the trouble on a second viewing.
octothorpe, Elba plays Stringer Bell, who is one of the chief characters in Season 1. Here's his first appearance, early in the first episode, where McNulty sees him watching a trial; Stringer Bell's the suited fellow with the legal pad.
Hmm, I don't remember him at all, but the show didn't really make much of an impression. Mostly I just remember the white detective with the bad American accent.
Must resist Prometheus advertising so I remain completely surprised. Let's see how long I can be on the net without knowing anything about the project.
