14 March 2012

Sad day The smartest guy I knew in high school took his own life last Friday night at age 55. I just found out last night. We only saw each other occasionally as adults, but we stayed in touch online and had many discussions about science and politics.[More:]

I have a few friends to call, and then I'm going to post on a private forum for graduates of our very small HS.

Thanks for listening.
I'm really sorry.

It's always hard to bear that someone we care about is feeling that way about living, isn't it? I've been through it a couple times over the years, and my reactions have ranged from anger and outrage (when a 20 year old friend did this in response to his girl breaking up with him) to utter sadness (to find out that a friend had been struggling with crippling depression for ages, without anyone being aware).

I'm rambling a bit. Suffice it to say, I'm really sorry.

We lost my very young college age cousin this way. It is always very hard.

Thanks, everyone. Apparently what precipitated the suicide is that his wife had divorced him, and he was not going to be able to see their boys as much as he wanted.

Crap.

It seems totally random, the life outcomes, based on however success is defined in high school. One of the smartest, most popular guys in my graduating glass pretty much destroyed himself with alcohol and drugs, and died after wandering drunk in the street and getting run over.

My condolences.

Thank you all. There will be a memorial service in a month, and it sounds like many of us will be there.
