1999-2012 R I P Haversack, Best Bag Ever. [More:]
Farewell fine Marine Issue Haversack
Stout and canvas green
Bought by teen me at a store
Thou you were stamped made in 1974
You never failed, dented, frayed or stained
Stalwart in budpestian bridges and L.A A frames
The right size and weight, with give and flack
Went with everything
Like garlic or dresses, little and black
How you carried pads and books and cats and nuka cola caps, mix tapes pencils stickers and little figurines of bugs, to heavy contracts, soild silver and maybe a few drugs.
How many scanners did you pass? How many loose item bowls?
But now, after a decade or so, we must part, for you finally have a hole.
Patch it!

Patching it would ruin the pure, unadorned beauty of the thing.

Patch it from the inside, so only a little spot of something else shows through. Or make it professorly and give it some leather elbow patches.

And chicks dig scars. Or something.

Look up videos of the button/blanket stitch if you don't know it already. It turns "sure i can sew (not really)" into "i can sew and it looks AWESOME and holy cow this thing has another decade in it"

Tossing it out unpatched is like tossing the kid out because they became a teen. Patch it!

but Haversacks are literally 5 dollars now!

You ...don't throw away teens?

I just learned that "haversack" comes from "havercake," which is a dry flat oat cake (scroll down) that presumably stands up to being carried around in shoulder bags.
