10 things you (probably) didn't know about me. Bringing back another old MeCha tradition. [More:]

0. Though I was born in MO and moved to NJ before I was 10, I still consider Louisville my "home."
1. When I feel homesick, I listen to a lot of Johnny Cougar (Louisville borders on Indiana).
2. Because I was born late at night in a different time zone, my birthday technically falls on the following day when I'm in the Eastern time zone.
3. I have only spent my birthday in the "proper" time zone once since leaving on my 2nd birthday (Dad's rationale for that last bit: He's too young to remember that we're moving on his birthday).
4. I have never been skiing.
5. I have, however, ridden my motorcycle through a snowstorm. It was actually kinda fun, albeit wet and chilly.
6. I've never had a cavity.
7. At least one of the kids I tutored in high school has gone on to become a teacher herself. Which is so cool.
8. I was probably the last person in my high school class to try Dungeons and Dragons. Everyone in my entire grade spent their free time playing for the first few weeks of our freshman year. Down to the last man. And woman. I held out until January when the "coolness" had subsided to safe levels.
9. My longest relationship lasted 9 years. Apparently, that's impressive to some people? But hey, I had fun.
1. I'm left-handed.
2. I have also never been skiing --- nor am I likely to go, ever.
3. I would, however, love to go skydiving.
4. I have three gold teeth; I have a pirate's smile.
5. I have a weakness for leopard print and black leather, but in an uptight Mrs. Robinson kinda way, not a free-wheeling biker-chick kinda way.
6. I used to paint for eight hours a day before I discovered that skill is not the same thing as talent.
7. The Fella and I made a deal: I never make him stay in a bed & breakfast and he never makes me go camping.
8. I'm currently working on a novel and a spec script.
9. I made a resolution: drink 100 bottles of sparkling wine, and keep track of where and with whom. I'm 3/4 of the way there, and when I hit the 100 mark, I think I'll bump up the goal to 1000.
10. I once spent a night shipwrecked stranded on an island.

1. I have a complete and utter love for diet vanilla coke and schweppes dry grape ginger ale.
2. Movies I can never not watch: the Princess Bride, Clueless, Bring it On
3. I have green eyes
4. I can't play any musical instruments
5. One of my examiners couldn't find much to criticize my PhD about scientifically, so he spent nearly 10 minutes haranguing me for using "neuron" (American spelling) while the rest of my thesis used British/NZ spelling. Dick.
6. I love road trips.
7. I am a magpie about clothing: I love bright and shiny things. Too much of my wardrobe is orange-hued.
8. I ate sushi when I was pregnant. And unpasteurised cheeses. And deli meat.
9. Favourite beer: Newcastle Brown.
10: Less than two months until I go to NZ on holiday, yay!

2. I played ice hockey, very poorly, for club teams in college.
3. I once burnt my hand on a fridge lightbulb. (It may have been a black light bulb.)
4. Although the rest of my family have jetted around the world and even lived elsewhere for months at a time, I have been out of the country exactly twice. Once was to Canada (staying with a MeFite) and once was to Mexico. Not a resort, though.
5. I lived in Delaware for the first ten years of my life, but am indisputably Midwestern.
6. I have a tendency to pick up accents (or approximations thereof) while in the presence of people from that region.
7. I have been skiing exactly twice, most recently in 1992 or so. I wouldn't mind going again.

2. I have never skied, and hate snow and cold weather with a passion.

4. Movies I can't not watch: Field of Dreams, Amadeus, Airplane!, Aeon Flux
5. I'm the traditional bull in a china shop: I WILL break something sooner or later.

7. I have lived in 7 US states and 7 countries outside the US.
8. I never finished college.
9. My favorite music runs the gamut from opera to Romantic-period classical.

vi. I read The Restaurant at the End of the Universe in 10th grade and it was my gateway book into SF/F.

V. I poo at least twice a day, every day, always with a healthy result.

I also have a violin and viola, which I have taken lessons on, but I don't practice nearly enough. I just saw a video of someone playing the bombard, and now I want one.
VII. I was in a TV commercial as a kid. It was to encourage people to become foster parents; my mother was a social worker, and they decided to use the staff's children to be in the commercial. Supposedly, they picked me because "I looked like a foster kid."

Let me just say I have loved reading so many of these... so many cool/strange/funny things to learn about fellow bunnies. And a few that I might have guessed, had I thought about it. :)

1. I get freaked out having to deal with poisons (bug spray, rat poison, etc) or electricity. The latter's kind of ironic since my dad worked as an engineer for a company that made wire and cable, made transformers and eventually superconductors (which were his project), etc.

2. I was once an extra in a Civil War movie.

3. My outlook on life can largely be chalked up to the Tao te Ching and LSD, both of which I encountered in my early 20s, built on a base of Sesame Street and Mister Rogers's Neighborhood in the 1970s. (3a. If my morals were a religion, Fred Rogers and Jim Henson would be my saints.)

4. Riding in a plane, car, or train almost always puts me to sleep. I hate the constant interruptions in airplanes because I could sleep through just about any flight.

5. I've been "indoor skydiving" and was actually pretty good at it. (Well, I got near the ceiling and they started giving me the "Cross your arms! Cross your arms!" signal.)

6. The first movie I ever remember seeing in a theater was the original Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory, in 1971. I was 6 years old and it was the most amazing thing I had ever seen.

7. One of the things I most want to do that I haven't done: go to a drag race. There's an NHRA track not too far from Atlanta- I really want to go. I also really like movies about racing and/or cars. (Two-Lane Blacktop is a big favorite, though it's about cross-country racing.)

8. I once collided awkwardly with Rev. Jesse Jackson in a men's room door. Before I could even apologize he said, "Whoops, that's okay son, you have a good day." And I can still hear him saying it in his voice, in my head.

9. I love classical music almost as much as I love pop/indie/etc music. My ratio of classical/non-classical listening is probably about 50-50 these days. I've liked classical music since my teens, but my college-aged, Joy Division/Cure/Velvet Underground obsessed self never foresaw this.

10. Pat Buttram, also known as Mr. Haney on the show Green Acres, was my grandfather's cousin.

2. I spent a year as a front desk clerk in a haunted hotel in Austin, TX.
3. I have never used illegal drugs, but not for lack of trying.
4. My first childhood memory was watching Elvis's televised funeral.
5. I once knew a girl who left a trail of M&Ms from my apartment to a bar four blocks away, just so I would go out with her.
6. "The Long Hot Summer" starring Paul Newman was shot in my hometown. My dad appears in the church picnic scene. I was once interviewed on AMC as an "expert" on the filming of the movie.
7. I've had cocktails in a newsroom alone with Walter Cronkite and I sat behind Dan Rather in a screening of "Happiness".

a. I often sleep with my legs crossed; it's a habit I got from trying to keep my feet warm as a kid in spite of blankets that were getting loose and falling off. Duvets are magic.
b. when I go running in the woods I often have moments where either 'original thinking' starts to happen; making new connections between things I observe and know, or where I enjoy the surroundings, the smells or the sound on my mp3 player so much, and I'm struck how it wouldn't be possible to communicate very well what's so special about the experience.
c. I feel rather alienated from metafilter and metachat. For some reason most comments I am about to make feel very pointless. (Like this one) And then I won't make them. I guess it's because I don't have a mental image of the person(s) I'm talking to. And because I don't find most ensuing discussions very enlightening or satisfying.
d. when I was 17 I was followed by a giggling class of Italian teenage girls. This was in the Italian alps where I was trekking. (I thought I'd include a self congratulatory anecdote. Inspired by coldchef)
e. I once was a voracious reader of high culture. But at some point I've developed a profound blahness about high culture. So much so that I can't bring myself to read physical books anymore.
f. I have an extra digit on either hand. As a result I can type a bit faster since I don't have to move my hand to hit 'enter', or to go to another line.
g. deleted, see c.
h. my grandfather had a scar in his face (mensur) from dueling as a student. That's why Hollywood movie nazis tend to evoke a strange affectionate feeling.
i. I have recently had a suit made by a Hong Kong tailor. The lining is bright orange.

2. I have over a year of unread New Yorkers piled up in various places around the apartment. They make me feel guilty.
3. I am very bad at posting pictures and remembering to take them off my camera.

:) Of course you remember me, though, Senyar, since I've hung out with you in person!
I just never know if the people whose names I recognize also recognize mine... I guess I'm internet insecure.

(For the record, rmless2 and anyone else who's uncertain: I recognized --- and was excited to read the 10 things from --- everyone here as quickly as I'd recognize a friend at a party.)

This is extra hard for me, because there isn't much about me I haven't already turned into a multi-paragraph anecdote.
(1) Born in a suburb of Cleveland, Ohio, the day before the Ohio Turnpike officially opened.
(2) Dragged to L.A. with family in 1961, via Route 66 in a brand new Dodge Dart
(3) Had a hernia operation at the age of 6. Scandalized the hospital by showing everybody the groin-based scar.
(4) My first adventure in nerdiness was trying to keep Episode Lists of all my favorite cartoon shows (and all the individual segments therein). Decades later, when such lists showed up on the Internet, I learned how badly I'd done.
(5) The first copy of Playboy I ever hid under my bed contained the short story "Duel" that was made into Steven Spielberg's first "Movie For TV" (and featured a radio DJ on the soundtrack I would end up working for years later). I remember that story more vividly than any of the centerfold girls.
(6) Had my tonsils taken out at the age of 16. (Our pediatrician didn't believe in the dominant 'get em out young' theory, so I had too many sore throats as a kid.) They also removed my adenoids while I was under and I woke up feeling LITERALLY empty-headed.
(7) Played the clarinet as a kid... intended as a stepping stone to the much cooler saxophone, but that didn't work out.
(8) As part of my Radio Sidekick fame, somebody made t-shirts with my picture holding a phone and the caption: "Keep America Beautiful. Keep Wendell on Hold."
(9) I have owned 7 cars, 5 of them until they fell apart and could only be sold for salvage.
(10) My most embarrassing medical problem was hemorrhoids in my early 20s (officially too young for them according to my doctor). Recurred occasionally until I was almost 40, then stopped, not to return until last week. Another medical mystery.

6. Excessive flatulence gives me tasty baked beans.
7. My face no longer stops clocks. At least not the digital ones.
8. I invented a type of lawn dart with a rocket assist to be used on concrete pavement. They never really caught on.
9. I talk to animals. They understand me perfectly. But only my parrot replies. He won't tell me what's up with all the others, though.
10. I often do not take things seriously.
