So our cat Guinness is going to lose one of his legs. Not a great night here. [More:] Guinness is a cat we adopted after he'd been hanging around the neighborhood for many years, and after some of our neighbors said they were going to bring him indoors, but then didn't. He has FIV from fighting with tomcats before he was neutered (it spreads via saliva-to-blood contact, like a bite) so once we took him under our wing, we didn't bring him indoors with the other two cats. We put a cat flap on the enclosed porch, gave him a heating pad on the futon out there in the winter, and that has worked well for the last three years. (The porch was also my partner's smoking room, and therefore living room, until he quit smoking a few months back.) Point is, Guinness has been a part of the family since long before he was technically "our" cat.

But anyway, Guinness came in when I got home from work today for his usual hugs and cat treats, then went back out like he always does. He came back in when my partner got home, which he usually does, but he was bleeding and his left back foot was a mess. Like, bones poking out. He must have run across the road and had his trailing foot nailed by a car. This is exactly why I don't like cats going outside, and I've always been nervous about Guinness being out there, but it seemed to be the only way. Now he's at the vet, doped up and asleep thank goodness, and the vet has confirmed he doesn't have any injuries other than his destroyed foot.

He'll be transferred to an animal surgery center on Sunday night/Monday, and then I dunno when we'll get to bring him back home. He's always wanted to be a house cat, so now I guess he gets his wish. Luckily he gets along with Kayla and Bob- the only real worry we have is that Bob likes to annoy and wrestle with G when's he's in the house, so we'll have to keep them separate for awhile, at least when we're not home.

So those of you who know Guinness, send him some good vibes tonight. He could use them.
Sorry dear :(

Oh that sucks. Strength Guinness.

Sorry to hear about Guinness. He's a handsome guy, looks a lot like an older version of our Hope-a-Dope, so we'll be sending catnip vibes and kitten voodoo his way.

Guinness never showed (me) much in the way of personality, but I love his aloof attitude. You'll have to get a new window box and bring his box inside. How will you handle the FIV with Kayla and Bob? He's lucky to have you two for guardians.

Oh, poor guy :( He sounds like a battler though, and I bet he'll recover well.

That sucks and I am sorry but cats are amazingly able to deal with stuff like one fewer foot like it's no big deal. I wish Guinness a speedy recovery. And special hugs to Bob and Kayla.

Oh and I had a cat that lost a leg to a car accident. She got hit in front of our house and we found out from the vet she was pregnant. She did just fine. Popped out five all black kittens that were like exact clones of herself. She was a great, if very stern, mom.

Awww, poor kitty! Hope his recovery is swift.

Aww, poor boy. At least it was a hind leg, they adapt better to losing one of those than a front leg. I'm sure he'll heal fine, but sending good vibes your way. Big hugs to the whole BP family!

Speedy recovery Guinness! And many hugs for BP (((((()))))

Oh, BP, I am so, so sorry to hear this. I have a friend whose cat lost a back leg after being run over and that cat can run, jump and climb like no other, he's like greased lightning.

Sending good thoughts from me and Lucy to you and your kitteh.

Guinness is going to snap back from this quickly, he's going to be fine! Please keep us updated, BoPo. I hope you and your partner are doing okay. What a terrible way to start the weekend!

Aw Guinness; I'm so sorry to hear this. I LOVE Guinness; if anyone can bounce back from an amputated leg it's Guinness. ≡ Click to see image ≡

I'm sending good thoughts your way; split 'em up between yourself and Guinness any way you see fit. I'm so sorry he (and you) had such a hard night --- but I'll chime in with those above who know three-legged cats who bop along just fine.

My, he's a handsome cat! And a lucky cat to have such a sweet and loving home.

Thanks for the well-wishes, all, both here and on Twitter. We went over and saw Guinness at the vet today; we was all doped up on pain meds but still obviously hurting a lot. He did start meowing when he heard our voices as we talked to the vet tech out front before going back to see him. :)

He'll stay at the vet again tonight, then tomorrow we move him over to a veterinary surgeon's place who will look at him Monday and decide what to do. The vet thinks there's no way to save his foot, but obviously we don't know for sure till the surgeon sees him. I'll post again once things get to another stage. Thanks again for all the good vibes- he's a tough little dude.

I'm late as well, adding my prayers and well wishes to everyone else's. Guinness is a gorgeous cat (looks like a younger version of my Teddy), I'm sure he'll bounce back quickly.

Just got off the phone with the surgeon, and they're going to do the amputation this afternoon. We won't be able to see him till tomorrow. His other hind leg got more beat up than we'd realized at first; it'll be bandaged up, too, though at least it's not broken. The doc says he'll probably take three weeks to a month to recover; I'm really happy that I can take next week off work and stay home with him. (Though he's going to have to spend Friday this week alone for 7 or 8 hours, which worries me a little, but hopefully he'll just sleep all day.)

Apparently the examination of his busted leg was really painful for him, so I'm betting he'll be pretty happy when he wakes up tonight and it's not hurting him anymore.
