A brass band playing Walking on the Air Walking through town today there seemed to be a brass band at every turn![More:]A last minute change of tune from me today. It is the time of year for the Salvation Brass bands to fill the air with brassy vibes. I hope you don't mind the shonky quality Youtube clip that cuts off, just pretend you have walked into a shop or something. I don't listen to any brass band music most of the time, so this is very evocative of the Christmas season. Coupled with Walking in the Air from The Snowman it is a perfect storm of Christmas nostalgia.
I come from a banding family, on my mother's side, but it's rare to hear one in the south of Engand, except the Sally Army at Christmas (although I haven't heard one yet this year). It always takes me back to my childhood, happy times spent with my Auntie Nellie, listening to Blackley Prize Band rehearsing in its tiny little hut in Crab Lane.

I was in a high school marching band, but in the woodwinds section. So my most vivid mental image of a brass band (and especially a British Brass Band) is this.

My cousin Bryce plays in Diggle Band - here's a video of the band on Whit Friday, which is a HUGE deal in the Lancashire band world. My cousin plays cornet and he can be seen at 19 seconds in, walking directly behind the man with the 'Premier' big drum.

That is so nice, and I love the animation, too.

asok, you have the Giftstravaganza for today...any plans to post a song? Is this the contribution?

Also, if you ever needed proof that the UK and US are different cultures, the existence of something called the "Grimethorpe Colliery Band" does it handily.

I love this, spooky and beautiful, thanks. Brass bands have a haunting sound.

I love The Snowman; it's a lovely movie, and the music fits perfectly. Thanks so much for posting the clip.

In honor of my own birthday (tomorrow), I ask: || I am trying to describe the crowd in my local bar...
