You rock. [More:] I've been offline and overseas for a month or so and finally got to spend a little while reading on metafilter about the occupy movement. I'm really proud of y'all.
I wouldn't hold my breath. #Occupy has yet to prove itself any more than a very small yet very vocal minority. They still have to come to grips about how to handle the issue of whether or not to re-elect Obama. Backing Obama will further alienate a lot of frustrated Dems who have already decided to sit home rather than vote for him again.

That's our Ardiril, busily dousing the flames of hope wherever he sees them flicker. :)

It is an exciting time, aniola. So good seeing conversations happening in this country that should have happened a long time ago.

I agree - Even just a few years ago I was unable to imagine a movement not only this pronounced and vocal, but the widespread support it has from people who can't or don't want to actually camp out and join the marches. I actually have yet to meet anyone - honestly - who does not say they are in sympathy with the perspective of the movement. The number of people involved, though absolutely staggeringly huge, is a minority of Americans, but their basic views about the problems with government and business are shared by the majority of Americans.

Occupy is really not all that concerned with Obama at this time. There is an interesting aspect to this set of protests in that it is, honestly, non-partisan. There are members of many parties and no parties involved, but the questions they're talking about transcend the specific individuals holding office at any one time. I seriously doubt that Occupy will endorse any candidate in any official way, and am highly interested in what happens with the idea of the National General Assembly next summer.

I'm trying to get a group of my food-activism cronies together to go down and do a teach-in about the corporate takeover of the food supply in Occupy Boston sometime soon. I think that kind of thing is my best way to participate. But yeah, it's inspiring to see what is happening and also the very creative and authentic approaches the groups are using.

It has been exciting to watch, although sometimes disheartening.

Miko, that sounds like a great plan.

I have trained with the National Lawyers Guild to serve as a legal observer for OccupyChicago. The LOs just watch the arrests, noting badge numbers and the names/age/medical conditions of the arrestees. They gather witness information and other details that might be relevant to the arrestees' defense if necessary or an investigation into police behavior if necessary. I hope to have more time in the coming months to train as a First Defense Legal Aid responder to preserve the arrestees' civil rights in the first few hours after arrests.
