My oldest brother, who is a very accomplished pianist, got into a Tatum phase when he was in college (following his Liszt phase). It was interesting hearing him working through transcriptions of Tatum because he would play these long runs with a 19 over them as even 19:1 which sounded just tremendously wrong. He got much better over time.
Here he is playing Sweet Lorraine for the 2000 Van Cliburn competition (for which he was a finalist and won "Most Creative Programming").
Thanks for that link. He makes it look so effortless and matter of fact to simply play the hell outa the piano. Jazz is my favorite listening music as it covers all moods and always hits my ear just right.
I went to a Liszt program over the weekend with 4 separate pianists. They were all good but a bit to grand in the hand guestures. They played selections from early to late Liszt ... Now that was one prolific guy - it would (reportedly) take 5yrs of continuous listening to go through all of his works.
