How do you get out of a dumpster? [More:] It turns out my beloved immersion blender might not have been nonfunctional, the plug it was plugged into doesn't work. I can see it at the bottom of the dumpster but I can't figure out how to get out of the dumpster once I got in. I need a folding chair to get into the dumpster but if I got it in the dumpster to help me out, I couldn't get it out again. It took a lot to give up on the immersion blender and chuck it out in the first place. I am in no fit shape to be crawling in and out of dumpsters. This is where boys skilled in parkour should swoop in, leaping about with the greatest of ease.
Tie a long rope to the folding chair. Tie something throwable to the other end of the rope.

I have no means to get rope, and I am feeling queasy from smoking a stale cigarette. Horrible idea, that cigarette.

Do you have access to a rake or something similarly long-handled? Can you stand on the chair outside the dumpster and rake the blender out? Or maybe just snag the cord and use it as a line to pull it out?

I have the part with the cord. The other parts are just sitting there, until there is more garbage on top of them.

No rake. I need one of those grabby things older people have. Just an extra foot and a half.

Do you have a broom or a mop or anything of that nature?

The longest thing I have is a plunger and plunging won't help.

A plunger is a foot and a half. How about a wire hanger and some pliers?
posted by Ardiril 28 August | 20:29
If only I knew how long they usually last. I figured it was burned out because my mother never took hers out of the box and it didn't work, after a few years of just sitting there. It's been in storage for a couple years.

Actually, forget the plunger if you have a wire hanger.

Pliers, no wire.

I agree, the stale cigarette was a bad idea.

Do you have a step stool, the kind you'd use to get something down from a high shelf? If not, skip ahead to #6. If you do have a step stool:

1) find a couple of things like the belt from a terry cloth robe, a scarf you don't like or an old bed sheet

2) tie the folding chair and the step stool together using the items from #1

3) drop the folding chair into the dumpster and leave it attached to the step stool on the ground

4) climb into dumpster, retrieve immersion blender, climb out.

5) haul out folding chair by pulling on bathrobe belt.

6) In case of no step stool, log onto amazon.com and buy a new immersion blender. They have some nice looking ones for about $30. Many people would rather spend $30 then dumpster dive.

Please update and let us know how it goes.

umm can you get someone to hang around while you're up to it? that'd be best
posted by Firas 28 August | 21:20
To be completely honest, I'd leave it there. Once blender touched dumpster I couldn't ever use it with food again. Is it particularly expensive? Why not buy a new one?

What Splunge said. Unless you're talking about a Bamix, in which case it's worth getting a little dirty for.

Please post the results. I want to know. thx

In the end, I wasn't going to chance getting stuck in a dumpster, but I certainly thought about it a lot. I loved that thing, but I can live without one for the time being. I have to. It sucks all around. I am still wondering if they have emptied the dumpster.
