27 August 2011

reporting in after Irene is past here[More:]
Staying at Mom's in Wilmington NC which is below hurricane landfall. Rain and wind are over. We were without power for 22hrs but are now back on grid. Only damage so far are roof leaks.

Have no report about my place. Will stay with Mom tonight.

Anyone else have reports to share?
My wife's family in Puerto Rico barely had any rain, and had a little wind where they are on the south side of the island near Ponce. There was a bunch of rain the two days after Irene moved on.

Here in Denver it's not affected us.

The highways around DC are getting scary, cars are throwing up huge walls of water and people are driving way too fast for road conditions. As usual, it's the other people you have to look out for, not the weather itself.

Home now, wind is picking up but nothing too bad yet. I just really hope we keep power.

South Jersey (upper south), pouring rain, stiff winds, so far okay from where I am, but I'll check in later. I hope everyone is okay!

Fresno is still sucking.

but that ensures a pleasant onshore breeze here in San Luis Nabisco...

In Hillsborough NC (near Chapel Hill) the winds have died down, but it really wasn't bad at all this far west. I say that because my electricity stayed on the whole time. Others in the area are not so lucky.

We have started drinking.

Here in Chicago, we actually had an amazing blue sky, sunshine, cool breeze day.

The webcam on my sister's building outside DC is showing lots of rain and some wind, but it's still running, so I guess they have power. They did their drinking earlier at the wine bar on the corner.

Wens, we have been drinking straight since last night (first in Calabash, then in Chapel Hill, NC). Calabash saw a bit of rain, wind, but not too bad. Chapel Hill has actually seen a shit-ton of wind and trees are down. Booze has been truly welcome. Thankfully, the part of Chapel Hill I am in (Northeast side, REPRESENT!), our electricity hasn't dropped, although that hasn't been the case for the entire town. Wens, didn't know you were a Hillsborough person!
I am off next week back to Brazil, where we have no natural disasters other than a remarkable about of lightening (which tends to kill cattle, of which I own none). I much look forward to it.

Seattle was gorgeous today. Hoping all is well with all east coast bunnies.

Burtonsville MD here. It really didn't seem all that bad for me. The power flickered a few times, but didn't go out at all. Although the BGE outage map is a sea of colors, which means that the power is likely to be out at work, but since it doesn't seem that bad outside, I'll go in and make sure. If it's completely out (and not just a phase or two), I'll just call the main library and the courier and cancel. (Luckily, work is only a few miles from my house, so the travel time isn't bad.)

I haven't talked to my folks, my brother, or my homie yet, so they might be without power, which means I'll probably see my mother later today because she can't stand being without air conditioning and the generator my dad has isn't quite up to the job of running central air.

Overall, I'm glad that the storm didn't meet my expectations of EXTREME DOOM because I was so not prepared. I really need to make that a priority and figure out how I can do that and keep it updated. And I guess one good thing is that whatever drought conditions MD may have had are likely to be gone now.

There's a small tree down at the end of the block, but everything's OK here in DC--no leaks, a few sticks and leaves on the ground.

Came through the storm just fine here. We did lose power for 1 1/2 hours last night, and I really couldn't sleep listening to the wind. No damage to my house or my surrounding neighbors houses, though there's a big piece of stockade fencing down across the street and a large branch down from a tree near our mailboxes. The sun actually made an appearance around 7:30am, but it's back to clouds. Still windy but no where near like last night.

Power was out at work (all but 2 of the emergency lights), as to be expected. And lots of leaves down, but no big trees. There was a decent sized limb that came down on my street, but the crews were done clearing it by the time I got home. I was surprised to see that the lights were out with no one directing traffic on Route 29, since that's a major road, but at least it's Sunday and there's not likely to be many folks out and about.

Nothing in Pittsburgh, bright and sunny today; Philly got everything.

in NY, nothing too exciting happening in my high part of Brooklyn.
A few branches down. Saw a cool picture of water coming over the Battery Park retaining wall.
One of my friends on the first floor in Brooklyn is trying to keep water from leaking under her door but she is mostly doing ok.
BF's parents in the Bronx lost power.

Trees and limbs down across town, but no extensive property damage that we saw. 75% of the region, including us, is without power and have been told that a full restore will take up to a week. A big storm, but I've been through worse. I wouldn't want to be on the coast or on the wrong side of it. Be careful, ne peeps. Battery powered tea lights, while usually just tacky, are a must have safe emergency light source - we marked all our corners with them and were able to navigate in the night quite well, in addition to flashlights and reg candles.

Here in my Boston suburb, we had heavy rain earlier in the morning and intermittent high winds. Still having large gusts off and on; keeping an eye on my backyard, full of large trees that occasionally wave in the wind, even the ones with thick trunks. One large limb down, but no whole trees. We still have power and more of our trees have leaves than I was expecting at this stage.

Just windy here, big gusts, power is on...so far nothing too intense.

MY parents in NJ evacuated overnight because they are right near the water and the storm surge turns their neighborhood, which is enclosed by 2 salt creeks, into an island. They're back now, home but no power. My brother and his wife have a flooded backyard and had some wind damage to their new restaurant site, but nothing serious. Really glad it wasn't the Big One for the Northeast coast.

So far, like nothing happened. In fact, Jon's out on the porch listening to music and feeding the pigeons. I'm watching Armageddon, appropriately enough, which Jon says was voted one of the worst movies of all time, but I love this movie. It's a great lazy afternoon movie. I get all faclept watching it. I haven't checked my car yet, but it should be okay. We poured out the pots of water we had on the counter. I guess we can eat the Vienna sausage and canned ravioli with mini meatballs, if we want (I love that crap; it won't go to waste). Looking forward to visiting mom and the U.S. Open this week, my last week of summer vacation. Gotta make the most of it.

I was out on my front porch at 2AM. It was windy and rainy. I was watching some great cloud movement. But otherwise, for me, not that bad.

I am really hoping that this fizzles completely before it reaches us, so your updates from the south are bringing me much comfort, y'all. If the worst thing that happens today is The Fella coming home from work at midnight* and poking gentle fun at me for filling up water bottles and putting down storm windows, I'll be delighted.

*I know!

Battery powered tea lights, while usually just tacky, are a must have safe emergency light source - we marked all our corners with them and were able to navigate in the night quite well, in addition to flashlights and reg candles.

This is such a great idea! Last night I had to retrieve a pillow from the living room after lights out and suddenly realized how much nighttime navigating I do by the tiny stars of light from various electrical sources: a charging laptop, a charging phone, the neighbors' porch lights and the distant lights from the parking garage peeping in our windows.

Any idea how the south coast of Long Island did? My sis-in-law is under the impression that her house is underwater. I sure hope not.

Still didn't have power when I left home this morning; the power company site says we're still down. I hope I have power soon, so the stuff in the freezer is okay. The dog was pretty freaked out by the storm, or by the frequent warnings on tv before the power went, but once he went outside, he liked the wind a lot. Lots of debris, small branches and a couple of large limbs and even trees down. No one badly hurt in Maine that I know of, though lots of flooding.

Despite the warnings to stay sober because of the emergency, liquor is a big help. I visited a neighbor, who poured me a rum-n-coke, then came home and drank beer. It's important to stay hydrated. The sound of the wind in the trees was, literally, awesome.
