Stuck Inside! What's everyone doing to pass the day today?[More:]I fell asleep last night around 9 p.m. - sat down on the couch one second and POOF was fast asleep the next. Dragged myself to bed around 10:30, right back to sleep. Woke up at 7 ready to take on the day! Put my chili in the slow cooker, baked a cornbread in the cast iron, filled all my water pitchers, made a big bowl of microwave popcorn, because there's no way I can survive a hurricane without popcorn. The dog and I took a walk around the neighborhood- mostly quiet except for lots of dogs getting in their walks. Now I'm watching Project Runway on MyLifetime.com, cleaning up my desk, puttering around the house.

What's up in your neck of the woods?
I'm cleaning. I steamed the grime out of my bathroom - oyoyoy, was it really that dirty? I can't believe how much grime was hidden around the toilet seal, and in the corners. I am just about to start on the stove, see how filthy that is.

Baking bread, making hummus, doing dishes, physical therapy, closing storm windows, watching The Adjustmen Bureau. (We expect to have power today, but maybe not tomorrow.) Taking a long hot bath. Wrangling (somehow) into the basement the mysterious metal tripod that appeared on our shared porch a couple of years ago and has resided there ever since, so it doesn't bounce around in high winds.

Warm and sunny here so we're heading out to do some carpet shopping. We've lived with raw splintery pine floors for four years now and are finally going to do something about them. The existing carpet smelled so bad when we moved in that we had to rip them up but we're getting tired of having to wear shoes in the house. We're going to attempt to sand and refinish the floors on the first floor but carpet upstairs.

I'm not actually stuck inside yet; we're farther north, so we don't expect to see effects from Irene until this evening. (And I'm hoping we just get a lashing windy rainstorm, but I'm preparing for something slightly worse just in case.) The Fella's going in for a daytime shift, then we'll have a rare Saturday night dinner together, then if it's not too rainy, we'll head out to our neighborhood bar to buy a friend a birthday drink.

I am considering starting a G+ hangout. People can drop in and out all day long.

Is anyone interested?

It just started raining here on the outskirts of Philly (ahead of the hurricane). Getting the dustbins stowed in the basement, trying to convince my feckless neighbor to take their kids' bikes indoors, and stocking up on milk and bread in case of the (somewhat predictable by now) power outages. Last time we had high winds here (not even a tropical storm), the furled garden umbrella disappeared for good, the dustbins ended up two yards away, and my honeysuckle was uprooted.
Also trying to get some work done, but it is not "taking." Strange how obsessing and somewhat exciting the thought of a major hurricane bearing down on you can be ...

I'm still stuck inside by 100+ heat. I think this is going to be a day for converting the bed into a throne and then spending all afternoon reading in it.

I'm in Maine, where current predictions apparently call for Irene to arrive as a tail-end Cat 1 or a tropical storm (and where I'm really, really hoping it's just a big messy anti-climactic rainstorm.

Silly question is silly: Should I be concerned about our neighbor's great big composter, which is stationed (but not secured) right outside our kitchen window? For that matter, my building's trash barrels (plastic) aren't secured, and goodness knows I don't want to do anything with them.

I've never weathered a serious storm in an apartment before, so I'm getting slight lack-of-control anxiety. (I did sit out an evacuation order during Hurricane Bob because my invalid grandmother refused to leave, but that was a family home where I could batten down everything within sight.)

Gosh, this hurricane is more serious than I imagined. The consequences could be devastating.

At the moment, charging everything that needs to be charged. This morning had the kid out until the rain got quite hard, desperately trying to get as much running around done as possible. Now she's getting ready for her nap, and I'm going to try and do as much work as possible.

Later this afternoon I predict much art and crafts and maybe some (quietish) running up and down the hallway (it's carpeted and the kid doesn't make much noise).

Irene blew through here this morning, and the wind is still whipping around making a bigass mess of things. I went to a meeting this morning at a building that had no power, luckily we didn't need it. Where I am right now still has power, but we don't know for how much longer. That damn wind!!!!!
I am working this afternoon, but intend to spend the evening with friends. Even if the power goes out, we can still drink.

I'm taking as many shits as possible before the water cuts off.

Watching TV (Flipping Las Vegas, Parking Wars), cleaning up the kitchen, maybe write a couple new proposals for DonorsChoose and try and get some books for my students for the coming year (I didn't write any last year, but this year it's down from a little money to no money in the school budget for new books, and some of our class sets, after almost ten years of use, are in shabby shape), then, later, I'll make us a fortifying hurricane supper of steak, crab cakes, tater tots, and steamed veggies. That should hold us should we lose power and it's peanut butter and canned ravioli, which isn't so bad, actually. Jon took in the chairs from the porch, and our neighbors did the same with theirs. I was thinking of filling our two thermoses that I use for work with coffee for tomorrow, just in case. Maybe I'll read, take a nap. Feeling sleeeeeepy...

You could keep the coffee on your nightstand and not even get out of bed in the morning, whether you have power or not.

Playing chess and Arimaa, but my brain is beginning to liquify.

Ardiril, that's brilliant! I went to pick up from the produce co-op early this morning and felt completely unsociable. No morning coffee at that point. We got a huge haul this time, making up for last week's paltry basket.

On the way home I picked up fresh bagels, farm eggs and avocados, which never seem to be in our Saturday baskets. Stellar breakfast. Then took grandbunny to visit horsies down the way. They enjoyed some treats from our produce haul too!

Now I've had a nap. Feeling all refreshed for a night in babysitting Henry. My daughter is going to a wedding shower for an old friend. It's a lingerie shower. Daughter's boyfriend hadn't heard of that. "Do y'all wear your lingerie to the party?" After she stopped laughing she teased him, "in your dreams!"

Borowitz is the best. If you have any internet connectivity, you could do worse than to read his last few months of daily 'reports'. (If you fear future outages, pre-load them for later reading)

It's not until now that only the first few drops are falling. WE're planning to go out this evening to see Southside Johnny & the Asbury Jukes so hope things don't get intense until much later.

I laid in cooking supplies for tomorrow. I'm gonna make enchiladas - they have everything; freeze and bakeable, plenty of leftovers, good cold or hot. And I got stuff to make cookies. Oddly enough, while I thought this was an original idea, when I got to the chocolate chips aisle I got one of the last 3 bags of chips. WE are such herd animals...

We're not stuck inside here. I'm making some cyanotypes today, and tonight we're going to go see Return to Forever IV. The opening act is Zappa plays Zappa. I'm quite looking forward to this.

Since around the beginning of this year. I looked at the rules years ago and didn't think it looked all that promising, but I came back and gave it a second look and saw that it was actually both fun and apparently quite deep.

My enthusiasm for abstract strategy games exceeds my natural aptitude for them, but... oh, well!

Just got back from a hike up Tidbits Mountain. I swear that the trail is a lot longer than 2 miles each way.

Hot and dry here. . .good luck all of you rightcoasters!

Enjoying this lazy day. Remembered to soak sabudana pearls last night so this morning made some delicious sabudana khichdi for myself and the boyfriend. Yum! My first try at recreating a dish that I remembered eating fondly in childhood. And it's perfect for rainy days.

After which we sat around lazily drinking tea and planning a future trip to NYC. Then he did the dishes and cleaned up while I fed the cat. He's off for a while now to promote this club of his at Cornell's ClubFest while I'm supposedly working on my proposal, but instead am here. Cat is snoozing lazily next to me.

When he gets back we'll probably play some games and read before having Nigella's Sage Chicken and Sausage bake for dinner.
