can I talk about my new computer I've been really wanting a new laptop for like an year so… turns out mine stopped powering on last night and forced my hand!!→[More:]

I actually borrowed another laptop and put in the same socket and that's gone too :( I wasn't thinking it was an electrical issue so in the coming days we'd have to work through seeing what the problem was, what needs fixing and if our data is safe or can be recovered

I got this:

HP Pavilion dv6
Windows 7 premium (64-bit)
Intel Core i7 2630QM @ 2.00 GHz
(4 cores, 8 threads)
8GB RAM (started off with four I had them put in 4 more)
600gb disk (I'm probably going to pull the couple-weeks old Intel 320 80GB SSD out of my old laptop and put it in this, hopefully it's not fried)
ATI Radeon HD 6770m

I'm happy :) Or would be but I'm feeling kinda grim and need to get back to things after losing a day's working time (and will also have to see what on earth happened with the other computers and what we can do) but happy in principle

Last year, I got a new laptop with a similarly decent mobile 3D graphics chip in it. It's a very effective anti-productivity feature. Because it means Minecraft runs quite well on it, whereas it would have been unplayable on my old laptop. Danger. Danger.

hmm so the solid disk and the external drive in my old laptop were fine.. will have to check about the other computer

the electrician kept insisting that the wiring and socket were okay so I'm like f it, I got a new UPS with my new computer so I plugged the UPS into the socket, plugged the laptop into the UPS... it's okay so far!! He said I shouldn't be paranoid about the socket cause as long as it's wired correctly every socket in the house gets the same power
