My last day is tomorrow; I am being laid off.→[More:] New chapter and all that. Please wish me a happy landing.
Oh fuck, hon. Here's hoping for a better tomorrow!
I hope it works out better for you than it has for me, which it will, you're not in a small tourist town that's hemorrhaging money and people. 15 months since my layoff and hey, do you want a bag for that? It'll be $36.45. Out of forty? Thank you for shopping at Home Depot! Yeah. It's great being back where you were in college - 25 years later.
I really hated the yay-positivity when I got laid off, so I will say: That sucks. You have my permission to act as whiny, sullen, and pessimistically as you like for the next while.
Thanks so much, guys. Why yes, it is four in the morning. I'm hoping to hold it together to say goodbye to folks and hand out contact info. HR is actually being pretty great, and I have resources to turn to. I have an acting gig lined up for the summer, but I don't know how that might hurt my unemployment filing or not. Maybe I can put off accepting my package till after the show? I don't know. It's all new to me. It is an opportunity that could work out, but right now I have some guilt and anger, neither productive.
rb, situations and state laws differ, but I'd file for unemployment ASAP. Your award may be diminish/be suspended depending on how much your summer gig makes. Most states make you file weekly (usu. online) where you have to declare any income for the week, and then if you cross a threshhold, you don't get any unemployment money. But I've also been burned by filing after a part-time gig, where the award amount was based on the (minimal $) part-time gig instead of my last f/t position. Though in that case, there wasn't really any getting around it. Basically, what they said to me was that I should have refused to work that part-time position (not explicitly, just based on their reading of the rules) despite the fact that you're not supposed to refuse any reasonable offer of unemployment.
Hopefully, your situation will be much less grar-making. Best to read up on your state's website, though.
Sorry again, dear. All the best; you deserve nothing less.
I'm sorry to hear this, and fully support the suggestion that you rail at the universe, HR, or any others. For as long as you want, or until your new job surprises you by being awesome.
Eideteker, you are right, I need to apply for benefits, and will sweat my way through outdoor Shakespeare to decrease those benefits for those weeks. I will also not teach at a good private school arts camp this summer for the reasons you cite. Stupid system, huh?
Stewriffic, I'd like to visit, have a Stewie and chewie day! But I worry about my car - engine light is on. I'll see.
I had no strength today and pretty much cried the whole few hours I was there. I worked with some good people, but it's just a job. Change is just change. It'll most likely be ok, I know. I'm not angry. I'm just tired right now.
