Spring is come, the flowers is riz.... and WHAT THE HELL IS THAT BY THE COMPOSTER? So, last night I had a little window of non-raining time in which I could garden. [More:]I spent a little over two hours in the front and back gardens at Swan's End. At the end of that time I had a bag and a half of weeds and dead growth and both gardens were about 98% weed-free. I had a mental list of what I needed to buy and plant. And I was recovering about as well as could be expected from the discovery of a VERY LARGE VERY DEAD LIZARD by the composter. The thing was 12 to 14 inches long and had departed this cruel world flat on its back with its mouth pathetically agape. I dug a hole nearby and lifted the poor thing into its grave with the shovel and many a shudder. Nature is ugly just as often as it's beautiful.

That deceased lizard takes the cake for the most remarkable thing I've ever seen while spring cleaning the garden. My neighbour from two doors down tells me she once found a 1915 nickel in her garden. No such luck for me.
Lizards aren't native to your part of the world, are they? So was this maybe someone's dead pet? Odd.

I'd certainly never seen one - not in the wild anyway. Maybe at the zoos or in pictures. I never thought of it as being someone's escaped pet.

Dig it up in two weeks and take a picture of the skull.

Sounds like someone's Christmas present escaped.

Sad and gross. There was a severely smushed squirrel in the street on my walk home last night and I said "yuckyyuckyyucky" out loud for like two blocks before I could get it out of my mind.

A dead lizard is cooler than the cat poop I keep finding near the seedlings for our salad greens. Blecch.

It was just such a shock. I was weeding, and when I reached that corner I saw something lying by the composter. I went over there to look at it, and then fled to the other end of the garden with a big "AUGHHHHHH!!!!".

And now I seem to be coming down with something. MAYBE THE LIZARD CURSED ME AND MINE AS IT LAY DYING.

I don't know why but every time I find a dead lizard, they are on their backs with their mouths agape which just seems like a really weird position for an animal that is slung so low. I can't help imagining lizards go through a very dramatic death scene while expiring, full of lots of chest clutching and hands to foreheads before toppling over backwards.
