04 April 2011

This is a whining thread. [More:]I actually Googled, "remedies for bad cold". I know there is not a cure. Usually I'm okay with having a cold. That's life. This one is killing me. I am on day six and see no improvement.

It sucks. I am doing my daily activities but my energy is seriously lacking. At one point today I heard a slight wheeze.

I hate having a bad cough in public because I feel like I am infecting people. Today I had a work-related class in a small room. I washed my hands a lot and used hand sanitizer. I still fear that the person next to me is going to catch this hellacious cold. I stupidly took somebody's hand at a baseball game on Friday night. My kid hit a homerun and I absentmindedly grabbed my friend's hand -- after I was coughing into it all night. I hope she is not sick.

I hate Day-Quil but I'm seriously considering taking some now so I can make dinner and function for the rest of the night.
Exactly what LoriFLA said. I forgot to take some day-quil before leaving the house and didn't bring any with me to work, but don't have the energy to go to the store to get some. BLAHHHHH........

Poor Lori! It's that horrible, horrible virus that's been going around for months. Freaking everyone I know got it. The only way to kick it (and avoid the double-whammy rebound that really got me) is to sleep as much as possible. Feel better soon!

My whine: hay fever. Cedar and birch pollen are having a party in my head, and it's making me miserable.

My brand new (as in, I've had it less than 48 hours) ipod touch froze in the middle of a software update and then my computer said it couldn't restore it b/c the hard drive was full, so I had to delete even MORE music so I can get back to playing Angry Birds. And just now, AGAIN, it says the ipod cannot be restored b/c of an error. MAKE IT WORK AGAIN!!! I want my new toy back!!!

If new and improved Firefox 4 crashes one more time I am going to do something drastic. Like bash my head into the wall repeatedly.

Not going to discuss how horrid I find it to go to MetaFilter and see a sea of faceless icons instead of little miniatures of everyone's profile pictures because stupid new and improved Firefox tampered with my Greaasemonkey script.

The itching will make me insane. Insane.

I had that cold too, Lori. Mucinex DM is your friend, once it settles in your chest.

I got mine back in January. It took a full six weeks to really start getting energy back, and I still wake up with a not-quite-a-cough/just-a-tickle-in-my-throat every night.

I hope your recovery is speedy!

Blah to that cold, Lori. I had a succession of them all winter (thanks, daycare!) but nothing that bad.

Can I whine about my jetlagged kid? Who is still awake at 10pm despite the fact that I know she is *exhausted* after our flight yesterday (she got about 6 hours sleep overnight instead of her usual 12).

For the last 2 1/2 weeks, I have had this otherwise tolerable cold that includes a cough so deep that I use different muscles than a normal cough. Those muscles are now so sore that I am on vicodin. I hate vicodin.

Well, it's not that I really hate vicodin as I am spoiled by morphine. My heart is so bad that the moment I enter the local ER, I get a pretty purple armband and a shot of morphine, ... even if my issue is clearly not heart related. Heheh. Life is weird.

Me too! I'm even crankier that the Australian English dictionary isn't compatible with it :-[

Thanks guys. This thing is a killer. I'm going to have to look into buying some MucinexDM. I have not taken anything OTC or otherwise. Not that I'm against it for health reasons or anything. I dislike the way DayQuil makes me feel -- weird and tachy but still sick. It does help with the runny nose and congestion. Tomorrow I'm taking something for day two of class.

Ardiril, several years ago I was coughing all through the night and could not sleep because of the damn coughing. I was desperate and took narcotics to stop the coughing. (I had some leftover Percocet from a C-section.)

The only time I broke out in hives is when my mother tried to take away my bottle. That must have been traumatic!

I hope jetlagged kids and Firefox get with the program. :-)

Isn't it the flu if it's that bad?

I had a cold/flu for three months. They tried a couple different antibiotics that didn't work and then offered one I couldn't afford. I spent the last half of it unmedicated, not that it really mattered since none of it worked. I threw up a few times when the coughing was at its worst. And I think I bruised and/or cracked ribs from the coughing. I have never been that sick before or since.

Anyway, I hope you get better soon!

Oh, and now the mister gets to join me in not being able to use OTC cold meds; me because of diabetes and him because of his heart. Poor guy.

I don't have anything to whine about except that House MD is a repeat. At least Castle is new, yay!

deborah, I see patients with a-fib all of the time. It does stink and can be scary, especially when newly diagnosed but it will get easier. Everybody with new onset A-fib deserves a shot at cardioversion. I read earlier that you were talking about a possible ablation. I've seen it succeed many times. My sister had ablation for SVT about 6 months and it was successful. SVT is not a-fib but I thought I'd share. There is a new med called Pradaxa that is an alternative to Coumadin. I'm only mentioning this because I'm just learning about it in the last few months or so since an increasing number of the patients at my facility are on it. It is supposed to be expensive and of course I don't know if it is appropriate for your husband or not. I just thought you might want to read about it. Knowledge is power and all that. :-) Best wishes and good health to your husband.

I can't really whine about my terrible cold when I'm still up at 1140. Goodnight all!

I don't think it is flu. I'm still able to function, work, kayak, go places, but the cough is a killer and my energy levels are decreased. I had no body aches or fever.

cold vs flu. The difference has to do with what is causing the illness. Flu is a respiratory illness caused by the influenza family of viruses, while most colds are caused by some version of the rhinovirus. They are both respiratory illnesses, but the flu is generally more severe. (The stomach flu is actually some kind of gastroenteritis and has nothing to do with real flu.)

Warning, rant follows: As far as antibiotics go, they don't work on illnesses caused by viruses, ever. If you have a viral illness and your doctor is offering you antibiotics, they're part of the problem. Antibiotics given for no reason (ie viral illness) and not taken properly (bacteria illness, but full dose not taken because patient is "feeling better") are what is creating these damn superbugs. Just say no to pointless antibiotics!

Got it, apoch. I agree. I never go to the doctor (lazy, can't be bothered) so antibiotics are not an issue. :-)

TPS, you're a night owl like I used to be. Have some kids and your habits will change. ;-)

LoriFLA, that sounds awful! Can you take a quiet day or evening and get some extra rest? When I'm all dragged-out-sick like that, sometimes the only thing that helps is staying in bed 12 hours straight.

I stayed up too late like a crazy person waaaaaaaah.

Me too, but only because of STUPID WISDOM TOOTH. I finally dragged my carcass to bed at dawn, slept 'til noon, and woke up from horrible nightmares to find one cheek swollen. I am now sitting on the sofa with an ice pack on my face. My extraction is a week from today, and (here's something I never thought my dental phobia would allow me to say) I AM REALLY EAGER TO HAVE ORAL SURGERY.

I wonder if it isn't asthma or reactive airway disease? I had a cough I couldn't get rid of for love or money, and my doctor diagnosed RAD. She initially gave me three different meds, but I'm only on the inhaler about once a week now.
