Work woes [More:] Without getting into too many details, the organization I work for is apparently having acute financial issues. The board is meeting next week to discuss how to move forward and what that looks like. The fact is the only cuts that can be made to the budget are personnel. And they're saying we need to make a lot of cuts. I'm sad not just for myself, but also for the organization and my colleagues. Cross your fingers for our financial security. I'm so dedicated to the mission here that I'll vomit if we go under. :-(
Oh dear. I'll be thinking about you all. Maybe you and other employees can brainstorm some stopgap measures that can reduce costs while keeping most or all the folks employed?

That sucks, you guys do so much for the community, why doesn't that count for anything??

It sucks, it's miserable, it's bad and it's grim. Miko, we did do just that, as well as providing some longer-term revenue raising ideas. But the board isn't seeming to step up to listen to us. The board chair did come in to talk to the management team, but it was a divide-and-conquer feeling instead of a collaborative roll-your-sleeves-up one. We each spoke to her separately and she didn't seem to listen too well. We also sort of have our hands tied. Our biggest revenue-producing department doesn't even know their own budget. We were never given that information. I knew I had X dollars to feed the teens during meetings, but that was basically it.

They're looking at, at least, cutting x% of staff salaries across the board or perhaps cutting a few of our biggest earners, but really we have a skeleton staff. I dunno, I'm just tired.

Dammit, so sorry Stewie. The attitude of the higher-ups is the worst part of it all. Are they not emotionally or personally invested in the work at all? Gah. I hate this shitty economy.
posted by toastedbeagle 24 March | 23:32
Thanks guys. I'll let everyone know what happens. I think the higher ups are doing their best, but they're in over their heads. I don't want to get into details, like I said, but basically we're in a leadership transition and the former leader did way more day-to-day than she should have in her position, so now they're struggling figuring out how all the pieces go together. This is why you don't put all your eggs in one basket. Eggs being duties and basket being one person.
