The Prison Diaries: Canine Edition The Story So Far. [More:]

We have no idea how Sugar is doing other than a brief conversation with the people at Animal Control who called about some paperwork. They said she was fine.

As for Winston, I put him in his own private jail, our son's former room, shortly before leaving for work. He went in willingly and didn't yelp before I left. I came back in briefly because I forgot something, and he still wasn't yipping, which was encouraging.

I arrived home, wondering what damages would await me. I was pleasantly surprised. Winston had pulled back the corner of the carpet (an old, ratty one that needs to be replaced anyway); other than that, he did no doggie vandalism that I could see. And no biological messes either.

It was a quick trip outside for him to do his duty, then back in for dinner, then back out to do some more duty and burn off the boundless energy that puppies have, until he was ready to drop.

I was pretty proud of him; he did okay. I hope we can keep this up for a week.
Oh, I guess I missed part of the story. When I took the dogs into Animal Control on Monday, they said that Sugar, having a lapsed rabies shot, absolutely had to stay there for quarantine. When they heard Winston gets daily medicine (glucosamine to help his hip dysplasia), they said that as long as we could keep him inside and away from other animals, we could quarantine him at home.

So that's why Sugar is at the animal shelter and Winston is home with us. It saves us some money, plus I don't think Winston would have done well at the shelter since he has boundless puppy energy. Sugar, being an older dog, is probably just chilling. Hopefully it doesn't get her down too much.

Poor Sugar! Is there any way you can visit her while she's in quarantine? It must be awful to have her away from home. I'm not sure I understand the full logic behind a quarantine for house pets.

State law I believe is that ANY dog that bites someone is subject to a 10 day quarantine. The cities apparently have some leeway in terms of how to administer it. This is a big city (750k in the recent census), so they seem to be a little more strict than the outlying towns.

Because we were behind on Sugar's rabies vaccine, I think the city rules say she must be quarantined at the shelter. I asked and they said there is no way to visit them while they are quarantined, which I can understand. When they would see their master but then be separated again, it could be tougher on them emotionally than if they didn't see their master at all.

Well, we made it through another day. I don't think I'll need to take up the carpet once the quarantine is done; Winston is doing a fine job of that all by himself ;-)

Today was a bit odd because in the wake of the bite on Saturday, we made appointments for the dogs for today- Sugar for her whole exam and shots and stuff, and the other two for a minor booster that was due (bordetella). Sugar was not available to day, and Winston got his booster Monday during his start-of-quarantine exam, so that left just The Innocent One, Cookie, needing a shot. So I came in as quietly as I could, got Cookie out of her kennel and took her to the vet. Winston heard this, though, and started yelping pitifully. But I had to leave him in there.

When we got home and Winston was ever-so-happy! =D

As has become usual now, he wants to be very close to me, at least for a while.
