The boy is working hard [More:] He just called. He's worked 24 of the last 30 hours.

The reason he called is because my wife had called him. This morning while she was feeding the dogs, Sugar, the crotchety old dame, and Winston, the exuberant puppy, got into a little tussle over the food. (They've been eating together okay for months.) Anyway, my missus stepped in to separate them and one of them (she's not sure which) bit her.

It's just a small wound on her knuckle, but we took her to the hospital anyway where they gave her a tetanus booster and antibiotics (no, dog mouths are NOT cleaner than human mouths, despite what the old wives say).

The hospital took the info about the bite, and Animal Control stopped by later. It turns out that all dogs, regardless of immunization status, have to be quarantined for rabies if they've bitten someone. Because it happened over the weekend, though, we can wait till Monday to take them over. (Weird, but that's what he told us.)

We're a little concerned because our babies will be without us for a bit over a week. Sugar is old and has had seizures in the past; we're worried that the stress will bring one on and they will attribute it to rabies. Winston is still just a pup. The quarantine will set us back about $250-300 (we have to pay for their boarding).

One complication is that we checked the records and Sugar is overdue for her rabies shot (which probably means a fine of some sort for us).

So anyway, we wanted to let the boy know what was going on, just in case the worst does happen. Sugar is his dog.

Best of luck for all of you.

We had a similar incident with a family dog, doohickie. We elected to put the dog into a private kennel (the city animal services had a list) with facilities for quarantine. With two dogs that option may be costly. I'm sorry for all of you. Being without your fur-babies sucks.
