10 February 2011

Life is good. Kind of. Or better, at least. [More:] My last post about the adjustments our family is going through made it sound, I suppose, like the wheels were coming off.

Believe it or not, just posting what was going on to MeCha helped me put things in perspective. Things are getting better.

My son that moved up to Albany: He has completed the training course he needed to start his job, and has his orientation tomorrow and starts working Monday. He also finally got the gas filler pipe fixed on his car; taking care of this himself is kind of a big step for him in my eyes. I hope this really is the start of him taking care of himself. I think it may be.

My wife, with the realization that her remaining ovary is kind of wonky, has decided to lay low regarding things with her family (that were bothering her), until she has her surgery next month. In fact, all the nagging things that have been bothering her, she's put in the bucket of "things she refuses to deal with until after surgery" which takes the edge off them.

The weather finally seems to be turning and I hope to get a long-ish bicycle ride in this Saturday; a friend is turning 62 and plans to ride 62 miles to celebrate. I have some other stuff going on and can't ride the whole thing, but I'll ride the first half with him through the stop at lunchtime. I've done some recent modifications to my bike and this will be my first ride of any length since then.

Also, since it is just myself and Mrs. Doohickie at home right now, and she's vegetarian, we've been scouring veggie cookbooks and enjoying really wonderful meals together lately.

A very good bucket to have. Congrats to your son for taking those steps.

Those pics look truly scrumptious.

The mandatory days off from work the past two weeks have been helping me find a good, solid, healthy perspective, I think. I'd been more than a little stressed out and not doing so well in a number of areas in my life. I was treading water and doing ok, but was just generally unsatisfied.

I've been reading your posts about your son and imagining my "kicking them out of the nest" phase that's going to happen in 5 or 6 years, ideally. I really appreciate reading your perspective on all of that.

Those meals look fabulous. Yay for the bike ride! I hope it is fun.

Please give your wife a hug from me. Kudos to her for figuring out what priorities are healthiest for her. Sometimes, that can be so hard to do. Please tell her that she's reinforced a stranger's goals that are similar.

I'm glad things seem to be working out for your son. And I hope Mrs Doohickie's surgery goes well. Those meals look scrumptious.

I like hearing about your life, Doohickie. I don't comment all the time, but I'm glad things are on keel, and I see you are EATING VERY WELL YUMMMO.

That was a great roundup of coping/transition skills. Glad you're feeling better.

I find this to be a very smart and useful strategy whenever I get overwhelmed by what seems like many concurrent problems - realizing that it's okay to deal with just one thing at a time, and let the rest take care of itself until I have the energy for it, is a lifesaver. I'm glad she's arrived at this place.

Such a fun idea! So fun, in fact, I may do this to celebrate my birthday this summer. It would fun to take a daylong scenic bike excursion with some fun stops along the way.

And your food looks AWESOME. Glad things are stabilizing!

In the future I'm gonna try to remember this before getting completely overwhelmed.

That omelet looks delicious!

The bucket idea is brilliant and I'm stealing it.

I'm glad that things seem to be smoothing out, Doohickie. Thanks for sharing your update.
