MP3 Shuffle-a-gogo? What's on your player? [More:] I know we still have a shuffle on the sidebar, but that's been dormant for a while, so I'm hoping to reinject some shuffle into the day. Plus I'm putting off a bunch of chores around the house on my day off.

MP3 player on shuffle, first 10 songs, no cheating. Here's what I got:

1. DEAD KENNEDYS - This Could Be Anywhere (Frankenchrist 1985) I used to love the DK's, but by Frankenchrist I was starting to lose interest. I haven't heard this in years and it sounds better than I remember. I love that guitar sound.

2. the ROLLING STONES - Luxury (It's Only Rock & Roll 1974) Other than Mick's fake Jamaican accent, this is one of the underrated gems in the Stones catalog.

3. CHRIS MARS - Monkey See (Horseshoes and hand Grenades 1992) I was a big Replacements fan, but all of these years later I play the first two Chris Mars albums quite a bit more than any Replacements or any of the other solo albums. For many people his vocals aren't up to snuff, but that's part of the charm for me.

4. CHEAP TRICK - She's Tight (One on One 1982) As a Midwestern power pop fan, Cheap Trick were my dream band and my love of them are as great today as it was when I was a highschool fanboy. The first 7 studio album (through Next Position Please) are all regulars on my MP3 player.

5. TED LEO & the PHARMACISTS - Mourning in America (the Brutalist Bricks 2010) I've always been hit and miss on Ted Leo, but his new album is solid all the way through. I need to go back to the older albums and make sure I wasn't missing something.

6. FOREIGNER - Say You Will (Definitive Foreigner) Ooooh, this is embarrassing. There are seven or eight Foreigner singles that I love. And then there are a few crappy AOR songs, like this one, that I hate. No guilty pleasure here, I hate this song.

7. GARY NUMAN - I'm an Agent (Telekon 1980) I'll be seeing Gary live in about a month and am counting down the days.

8. MUDHONEY - Execution Style (My Brother the Cow 1995) Shrieky Mark Arm and a killer guitar bridge that sounds like it came right off of the Stooge's Fun House.

9. the KINKS - She's Bought a Hat Like Princess Marina (Arthur (or the Decline and Fall of the British Empire (1969) If I had to pick a single favorite rock concept album about a carpetlayer it very well might be Arthur.

10. MASTERS of REALITY - V.H.V. (Sunrise on the Sufferbus 1992) For my money, this is one of the best blues rock albums of the 90's. Big heavy riffs and great playing - with many pages pulled from the Cream handbook, including having Ginger Baker on drums.

Well there you go. What about you?
(I took the old shuffle post off the sidebar so nobody would get lost.)

Kudos on the Mudhoney track. I like just about everything they've ever done, but they were really never popular in my circle of friends, which I could never understand.

1. The Mountain Goats - Lion's Teeth From The Sunset Tree, which to me was the end of a string of absolutely brilliant albums that started with All Hail West Texas. Not that their other stuff is bad, but those four albums are all you really need to know about this band.

2. Gang of Four - At Home He's A Tourist GoF and Wire were the bands that all the bands from Athens Georgia in the 1980s wanted to be. Entertainment! was a formative album on my young musical tastes.

3. The Velvet Underground - Foggy Notion

4. John Lennon & Yoko Ono - Yes, I'm Your Angel One of their silly songs, but still sweet. I don't think you could make music in 1970s NYC without doing a faux-cabaret song like this at some point.

5. Danielson - Five Stars and Two Thumbs Up From Ships, the best album by Brother Danielson and/or the Danielson Famile. I'd forgotten I had this on my player.

6. Meat Beat Manifesto - I Got The Fear (Pt. 5) I haven't been into their recent jazz-influenced music, but MBM's mid-90s output is so damn funky, I love it.

7. The Russian Futurists - Your Life on Magnetic Tape One of many bands I found out about via MeCha!

8. Stereolab - Percolator I have a ridiculous number of Stereolab songs on my player.

9. ABBA - Take A Chance On Me Much like with the VU song above, there's nothing else to say, really.

10. Primitive Radio Gods - Standing Outside A Broken Phone Booth With Money In My Hand Not a bad one-hit wonder to end the list with! And damn, I haven't heard this song in ages.

1. Metric--Black Sheep--from the Scott Pilgrim soundtrack--this is by far Metric's best song (I'm not really a fan of theirs) and the whole soundtrack is great. I just saw the movie again last night and if you listen closely you can hear this song in the background of an earlier scene (besides the one where it's actually performed).

2. Loney Dear--I was only going out--I like Swedish pop.

3. The Velvet Teen--Around the roller rink--I like their earlier stuff better but used to be friendly w/ these guys and so have a bunch of their albums. Actually this song is pretty good.

4. Robyn Hitchcock--Demons and Fiends--I remember going to a Robyn Hitchcock concert once at the Cat's Cradle (a regular ol' rock club) and they'd set up folding chairs. I had a lot of fun making old jokes at his audience's expense that night. Of course now sometimes I'd like to sit in a chair at a rock show.

5. God Help the Girl--Perfection as a Helper--this album is a bit too twee for me, which is really saying something. My favorite song on it is actually the reworked Belle and Sebastian song Funny Little Frog. But hey, the new B&S album will be out soon!!

6. Stereolab--The Man with 100 cells--everyone needs some Stereolab in their lives. (On preview: clearly BP agrees.)

7. Jimmy Fucking Jones--Snap my Fingers--LOVE this song. From an awesome comp called Looking for my Baby, which also has an excellent song called C'mon Cupid by Roosevelt Grier (yes, THAT Roosevelt Grier) which, if it appeared online anywhere, would be the heart of a great mefi post.

8. Crooked Fingers--There's a blue light--This version is a weird remix from the Call to Love single. Doesn't matter--CF is one of my favorite bands.

9. Saturday Looks Good to Me--Untitled--from the All Your Summer Songs album--I love retro-tinged pop music and this band does it well.

10. Weezer--Holiday--haha!!! Actually I loved Weezer when I was 14/15 and this album is still a lot of fun to sing along to.

1. Cut Copy -- Eternity One Night Only. Pretty boys make pretty, jangly, ephemeral pop music. I am enthralled. Repeat as necessary until they stick me in the ground.

2. Vampire Weekend -- Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa. Wonderful bright bouncy Caribe feel.

3. Arctic Monkeys -- Flourescent Adolescent. Destined to belong to many "Greatest Hits" compilations.

4. TV On The Radio -- Shout Me Out. TVOTR does a kind of early New Wave / Blondie-esque guitar thingie. Me likey.

5. Death From Above 1979 -- Sexy Results. I should listen to this album more often.

6. M.I.A. -- XR2. M.I.A. does her loud thing.

7. Bjork -- Pagan Poetry (Perfecto Presents remix) -- Bjork being, well, Bjork. With drum machines.

8. Trentemoeller -- Vamp. I love this whole album, and this is one of my favourite tracks. Moody and a good "focus / study" kind of track.

9. Arctic Quest -- Offbeat (A State of Trance). More ephemeral trancey techno from one of my ex-roommates' exhaustive collections. I have a lot of what we call "study techno" on my iPhone, because it helps me focus at work. Really surprised no Boards of Canada has come up yet because there's a shit ton on here.

10. Feist -- My Moon, My Man. This is some nice bright, crisp, clear autumnal day kind of music, nice way to end a set.

YES - It Can Happen -- arsey, that is my very. favourite. YES tune. EVAR.

mgl, if it makes you feel better, this is the first time in history I've done one of these threads when my iWhatever has actually represented my collection in a fair and evenhanded manner, and hasn't either 1) made inane repetitions of an artist that doesn't actually represent my core collection/tastes at all well, or 2) completely embarrassed me with some random non sequitur bullshit track that I never actually listen to like, oh hell I dunno, the theme from Caddyshack or a Bon Jovi track, or something like that. You know, that kind of weird bootleg crap that invades your collection via random silly drunken upload sessions at a friend's party, when it seemed like a good idea at the time.

what, you mean you never do that...?

1. The Doors - L. A. Woman: Always liked that track even though I was only a hardcore fan for the first two albums.

2. Thea Gilmore - Slow Journey #2: Love her. Love her unvarnished Brit accent, even while singing.

3. Anthem - Leonard Cohen: From Live in London. One of three versions of the song on my player.

4. Thea Gilmore - Fever Beats: Did I say I liked her a lot?

5. Lively Ones - Surf Rider: I was surprised that this turned up on the Pulp Fiction sountrack. My sister bought the single when it came out on 45rpm and I eventually took possession of it, and still have it. My favorite surf track.

6. Emmylou Harris - Time in Babylon: Always been a fan. This last album (Stumble Into Grace) not quite as strong as Wrecking Ball and Red Dirt Girl but still has a few great tracks.

7. Mary Wells - Laughing Boy: Thanks to one of you, probably.

8. The Decemberists - Hazards of Love 1 (The Prettiest Whistles Won't Wrestle the Thistles Undone): First track from Hazards of Love. Saw them saturday for the 5th time. SO SO GOOD. If Colin Meloy ever spat on my wife, I would encourage her to stop bathing.

9. Gram Parsons - Sleepless Nights: From either GP or Grievous Angel. Emmylou was on both of those also. Some of my favorite all-time music.

10. The Mamas and The Papas - Safe in My Garden: I love a lot of their tracks. They put out about 2 albums worth of good music, then kept recycling stuff on "Best Of" and other collections. Most of their records were manufactured, in the sense of being impossible to play live, with all of the vocal tracks, but I'm a sucker for that sound.

David Johansen - Funky But Chic
Chet Atkins - Mayan Dance
Glen Campbell - True Grit
Coheed & Cambria - Cuts Marked in the March of Men
Rare Earth - I'm Losing You
The Saints - Know Your Product
Goblin - Jennifer

Rare Earth: 60s SF white R&B; The Saints: 70s Australian punk; Goblin: Italian synth band that specialized in horror movie soundtracks. Except for Rare Earth, this is kinda-sorta representative of my casual listening.

Simon & Garfunkel - The Dangling Conversation

I have always wondered whether the original lyric was:

The DANGling
partiCIple,

But the meter sounded funny that way.

And a song about grammar, how boring would that be?

But still I wonder.

Nothing Left To Say - Cage (meh...I've tried to get into him, and really he just annoys me. He's too fucking insane for even me to get in to. This is only on my iTunes from some comp I downloaded free. I don't like it much.)
Fired Side Chat - Dillinger Four (fucking a, I love these guys. A band I really regret never seeing live)
She's Giving Me the Creeps - Screeching Weasel (a song I once featured on a MeCha lyric challenge. I think BOP got it)
Gigantic - Pixies (I don't have an "Odes to Peni" playlist, but if I did...)
E.N.Y. House - Masta Killa & MF Doom (great fucking track...Doom is almost always full of win)
Bubblz - Anti Pop Consortium (great song, great album...I saw Beans solo live once opening for Tortoise. He did a lot of weird a capella rhymes. It was really....eh.)
Fake as Fuck - Del Tha Funkee Homosapian (booty-lickin', straight ass-kissin')
Capital Radio (live) - The Clash (Sam the Sham and the Pharoahs - yes - not Sham 69!)
Three Car Jam - The Minutemen (throw-away track...just cars revving. Need to delete)
Forget - Mission of Burma (This is a bonus track on the remastered version of Vs. Solid as a brick. But isn't MoB pretty much always?)

I, too, regret never getting a chance to see Dillinger Four. Versus God is one of my very favorite punk records.

And props to box, whose list contains exactly one artist I've heard of. Off to the googles.

Metachat does have good taste in music.

OK.

1. Mission of Burma - Laugh the World Away
2. Nine Inch Nails - Big Man with a Gun
3. The Solipsistics - Honey Complain
4. Supergrass - Late in the Day
5. Blonde Redhead - Elephant Woman
6. Morcheeba - Love is Rare
7. Mazzy Star - Fade into You
8. Nirvana - In Bloom
9. Beastie Boys - Ask for Janice
10. Of Montreal - Sink the Seine

Well, not too bad a mix there. I'm not really a Morcheeba fan, or Supergrass, but i think I got the latter in a fit of nostalgia for early graduate school. Blonde Redhead I've always preferred live.

Love that one. Someone special gave that to me a long time ago, and then over the weekend, they played it between sets at a concert I was at. It really took me to a different place. . .a sad place.
