Song lyrics challenge! Name that song & artist:[More:]

1. When she's on her best behavior, don't be tempted by her favors

2. By the time the first bombs fell we were already bored

3. Your voice across the line gives me a strange sensation

4. I don`t care if the fascists have to win, I don`t care democracy's being fucked

5. It's the terror of knowing what this world is about

6. Cindy kills me every day

7. For you things seem to turn out right, I wish they'd only happen to me instead

8. I could take a Greyhound home but when I got there it'd be gone

9. The skirts go up before the war, among the madding crowds

10. Buy the sky and sell the sky and tell the sky and tell the sky
5. Under Presssure, Queen

#1 and #10 driving me crazy right now.

5 is right, rainbaby.

10. Fall On Me, REM!

Right! :)

Ah. I looked up #1. That's one of the tracks I always skip over. This is the best I've ever done!

#1 is my internet imaginary girlfriend, Neko Case - Never Turn Your Back on Mother Earth! Well, it's actually by a band called Sparks, I suppose.

When I saw her last, Kelly Hogan referred to this song as a "real powdered wig of a tune" which made me chuckle.

Also, YAY lyrics challenge...I've been meaning to post one, but I've been too busy at work to properly pay attention.

1 is right- and you even got both the recent version AND the original! Excellent. :D

Yeah, I've been missing the lyrics challenges, too.

Ten is the only one I could get, but that is because I was an absolute REM addict until they came out with Monster.

#2 is The Arcade Fire, but I don't know any of the names of their songs.

Oh! #3 is Hanging on the Telephone, by the Nerves, made MORE popular, I suppose, by Blondie's version. I really like the Nerves version though :-)

I think that's all I know, though there are a couple I feel like I SHOULD know.

I think #3 is Hanging on the Telephone by Blondie.

Too slow! (I knew #5 & #10 too)...

Since that one's so new, gaspode, here's a hint: it's the same as the album name.

Also: a virtual tie by misteraitch and richat on #3! Excellent! And another double-score by richat. I like the Nerves version a lot, too. :)

Six is Jesus and Mary Chain's "Taste of Cindy".
Seven is "What Do I Get" by the Buzzcocks.

So we're still missing numbers 4, 6, 7, 8, and 9

On preview: Slack just nailed 6 & 7.

I kept repeating #3 in my head since it's a lyric I know. I was thinking British seventies punk, not American power pop. I hate when I miss the songs I love. In this case, both versions. Had I been here quicker I would have gotten number one since it's been a Sparks favorite for many many years.

Are we ready for clues yet? Is #9 a singer/songwriter? It looks familiar, and I'm thinking something along the lines of Elvis Costello or Graham Parker. Late seventies/early eighties. Am I even close?
posted by Slack-a-gogo 20 August | 10:44
Not even close, Slack. :)
posted by BoringPostcards 20 August | 10:49
Oh duh, I don't think I even looked at #9. How embarrassing. It's the New Pornographers. Crash Years.
posted by gaspode 20 August | 11:02
That's it, gaspode!
posted by BoringPostcards 20 August | 11:06
The only one I know is #10

And ask the sky and ask the sky don't FAAAAAALLLLLLLL ONNNNNN MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

Two left, number 4 and number 8. Number 4 is going to be tough because it's a song where it's very hard to understand the singer.

I'll leave this up a little while longer, but I have to leave work early today; I'll post the remaining answers before I go.
posted by BoringPostcards 20 August | 11:35
OK, the last two were:

#4 = Jenny Ondioline, by Stereolab.

#8 = Goddamn Lonely Love, by the Drive-By Truckers.

This was fun! And y'all got them a LOT faster than I thought you would. :)

Wow - I really was way off on #9. I feel bad I missed a New Pornographers lyric, but once I was on that Costello/Parker path I couldn't get away from it.
