16 July 2010

3-point Friday update (including weekend plans) [More:]
1. My new handbag arrived today, from Amazon via a bunny in NY who took delivery and then sent it on to me. It is awesome! I don't like huge handbags, but I want one that will comfortably hold my stuff (including, always, a paperback book) and this one is perfect.

2. This weekend I absolutely must get to the garden centre to find some plants for my front and back yards. Weeds are starting to poke through, so if I don't get on top of this thing now, it'll start to become unmanageable.

3. I also need to catch up on sleep - it's been a busy week with not enough rest. So either Saturday or Sunday will be a quiet day - if the weather's fine on Saturday I'll do the garden, in case Sunday is rainy.
1. Going to the county fair today. I'm making mental notes to remember sunscreen and a hat and bring a bottle of water, but I'm still lounging about lazily in bed. It's not so bad, actually.

2. Tomorrow is a Chinese brush painting workshop, all day long. I'm feeling nervous about interacting with random strangers (for some reason, it's all fine and dandy on the internets, but stick me in a room and I get jittery), but I know it'll be worth it to learn something new and fun and make some art.

3. And Sunday is the next session of our current roleplaying campaign. For once, I'm not hosting! Yay, someone else gets to worry about food, and I can just chill out!

1. Senyar, that's funny - I saw those bags in Macy's recently and really liked them. I never carry handbags, but I'm starting to gravitate toward the latest round of shoulder bags. I just really like to have my hands free. But these have lots of great pockets and a practical-looking design.

2. Getting ready to go to the Brimfield markets this weekend. Very excited. It's an antiques fair/flea market of really shocking proportions...literally 5000 vendors. I'm especially excited because (a) we actually need some furniture, so we can look for practical things, and (b) every other time I've been there I have been broke. For once we will go with cash in hand and the intent to buy, which should make it way more fun. Making the battle plans now: like iriG.'s survival kit, we need hats, sunscreen, water bottles, comfy shoes, snacks, cash, and a checkbook.

3. It's less than a month to my birthday. I'd like to do something great to celebrate, but what?

1) It's been steamy hot in Chicago the last few days. Me and the Sprout have been going to all the pools and spray parks in the surrounding towns, and leaning on the generosity of our across-the-street neighbors with a pool. More of same today, tomorrow and Sunday.

2) My hubby is leaving on an 8 day business trip to Florence, Italy and the western coast of Ireland. Poor fella. It's very hard being on my own for a week with our kid, who is the cutest boy on earth but is special needs and quite difficult at times. Sometimes I look at the clock to see how many hours until his bedtime, and then I feel bad for thinking that way and for wishing my life away in 4 hour segments.

3) I played Mah Jongg last night and didn't win a single hand, and lost $2.50. Sometimes the tiles just don't go my way. I know it's sort of an old lady game but it sure is fun.

1. My last three weeks at work have been basically insane, but today is calmer, so I'm enjoying that.

2. And I'm off all next week, so yay!

3. Going over tomorrow to see elizarde and BitterOldPunk for the weekend- double yay!

1. Going out tonight with partner and new MeFite friend(s) to the Found Footage Festival, which should be pretty cool.

2. Risking a social showdown, with some people with whom we had a fallout. Stop me if you've heard this one, but this town ain't big enough for both of us, and it ain't me that's gonna leave.

3. On a more somber note, my boss is being forced out of her job, and I am so, so, so, so sad and upset and angry. She and my other boss (who's next, I'm sure) have been family to me in the last five years, and have given me opportunities which cemented my professional life firmly in the "professional" territory instead of an endless string of clerical jobs. I just don't know what to do other than just offering the usual hugs, flowers and help with cleaning.

1. My wife's mother had died (overnight) or will pass soon. She has crashed, over the past month, and we have struggled with timing of my wife's trip to Tucson (it is 110 degrees there now and flights are really over-the-top expensive) but she suddenly got a LOT worse last night. I put wife on a 6am flight this morning. So now I have a free weekend but the context of it necessitates being low-key (which is what I feel like being).

2. We had music plans tonight and tomorrow, with tickets bought, so I may give them away are maybe tomorrow find someone else to go with. Kelly Joe Phelps is tonight and I have heard so many good things about him that it's a shame to miss it but also do not feel like going out -- this in spite of the fact that I did not like wife's mom very much.

3. Catsitting, also. *smile*

1. Have some family from Pittsburgh doing a quick drop in this evening on their way to the beach. The mister wants to take them out to dinner at his favorite diner, but I am leaning towards this new restaurant, which looks amazing.

2. Lots of weed-beating this weekend in the yard if my allergies don't kill me first.

3. The mister is going to his first live show in years tomorrow night with a buddy, so I think I may take the opportunity to hang out with some of my girlfriends.

All in all, a pretty laid back weekend.

(sneaky fourth point) I read a heartbreaking story about all sorts of pets being put up for adoption in the Gulf Coast by families who just can't take care of their animals right now. Some of them are going to be coming to NC. I haven't told my family yet, but I am thinking of adopting another dog. I dunno, though, because I am head over heels in love with the one dog I have, and don't know if she would do well with a playmate, or sharing me. She is loathe to share me with anyone else.

1. Agonizing over whether to go to my brother and sister in law's baby shower in Philly next month. I have plane tickets booked (Friday to Sunday) but realized yesterday that Sunday school starts that weekend and I really have to be there. I could fly back Saturday night, but would have to hire a car service to take me to the airport, and is it even worth it for just 24 hours? On the other hand, I hate hate hate when my relatives all get together without me, which happens a lot since they all live in PA/NY and I live in NC.

2. I keep talking about moving to Philly but now I think I do want to stay in NC. But I really really need a full-time job with benefits. Seriously, I've had a stuffed up nose for a full year now.

3. Going out for drinks and to a concert after work tomorrow, so that's pretty cool. And Sunday I'm seeing Stew!

1. Sometimes you see someone you haven't seen in a long time, and sometimes, even if you aren't feeling but so sporty about yourself, they'll say something along the lines of "You look GREAT!!!" This makes me distrustful, and worry that the person has been walking around with an image of me in their head that is a big frumpy frumpball. Yes, I recognize the layers of neuroses.

2. Yard sale prep and house cleaning. Appraiser visit soon.

3. "catsitting"

1. Well, my weekend looks like it's shaping up to be tag-team child care with mr. g because the kidling is sick *again*, poor thing, so I don't get to work today, and we both need to get work done over the weekend.

2. We were going to go to the El Barrio museum break dancing contest, because kidling *loves* dancing (and will hopefully pick up some moves that she can hilariously emulate) so fingers crossed she's better by Sunday

3. Met up with Eide and halonine last night for yogurt. Wandered around SoHo/NoLiTa. Good times, good times.

Why am I worrying about the weekend? According to Yahoo Weather, we are all dead now anyway.

1. First day off in a few weeks, and I finally got some decent sleep. Work/class combo has been kicking my ass lately, esp. the f/t job where we work in an un-air-conditioned shop and the heat has been borderline intolerable. Fortunately, my micro-bio class is just about to wrap up and I've clung on to my A. Our final Lecture Test is Wednesday, so I've got to do a lot of prep-work for it this weekend.

2. Double-header in beer-league kickball tonight. My buddy that introduced me to the team isn't coming, and I've only met the rest of the folks on the team twice (at most). I get along with everyone well enough, but I've got some social anxiety brewing that I'll try to quash. Not much looking forward to hanging out in the sun for a couple of hours, but it is good fun, so I'll push through.

3. Off to go get my hair cut and face mowed and grab some lunch. Can't decide if a nap before kickball is a good or bad idea, but I may not have a choice. We'll see.

1) Posting my first comment on MeCha. Howdee!

2) Running an 8K race on a hot Saturday night. Sweating and panting. Watching elite runners fly.

3) Hopefully, at some point, borrowing a ladder to be able to climb to the top of my house and repair a piece of fallen siding. That flapping vinyl has been taunting me for weeks now, making me feel like a failure as an adult and a homeowner. Barring that, I may just sell the house and move into an efficiency apartment, as I am clearly not cut out for this Bob the Builder stuff.

1. Today I'm going to buy a cast-iron wok to replace an old (and damaged) Teflon one, yay!

2. Tomorrow is the 11th Anniversary MeFi meetup at the Green Dragon. It should be a good time, and it's been over a year since I've been to the Green Dragon.

3. If Sunday is not too rough, I may go to an art fair, but if I'm not up to it, I will punish myself with a long hike somewhere. All in all, it's shaping up to be a good weekend.

1. Yay cast-iron! I'm loving my cast-iron skillet more and more each day, now that I have properly seasoned it. Last night, I roasted some asparagus in it. Tonight, more asparagus. Very soon, I'm going to do fried chicken.
2. Can't wait to be done with antibiotics. They make me feel like s*&#.
3. We're discussing some re-decorating at our house, to better make room now that two people and two pets (SLYT of pet cuteness) live in the apartment instead of just one person and one pet, and you know what that means- IKEA TRIP! Yaaaaay!

ecrivain, the mister was of exactly the same frame of mind as you as re: home ownership, right up until I paid some nice contractors a few benjamins to fix the random flappy loose bits of house that'd been driving us both mad at Chez LFR... sometimes it is worth paying someone to do stuff like this, that said, we also have a standing invite from a friend who lives up the street to loan ladders and/or help us with such things too, so there is that.

1) maybe riding my bike up Mt. Evans tomorrow with some teammates. Maybe.

2) why are Fridays at BigPharmaCo always so insane? fercrissakes, it's Friday, peoples, can we please chill the fuck out!
2b) Dear Annoying Chemist Guy: you are Annoying. How you imagine this helps your case with Legal, I'll never understand :P

3) I have six bananas in the fridge, and I NEED to make banana bread. This in spite of the fact that it is still a million degrees out and I have no desire whatsoever to turn the oven on. Halp!
posted by lonefrontranger 16 July | 11:35
lfr - make one-ingredient banana ice-cream instead.

1) Nothing tonight. Good. It's been an extremely difficult (to put it mildly) week.

2) Wedding tomorrow of daughter of friend of mine. Whole thing has been managed a little oddly - as far as I can figure out, after planning the wedding months ago, a couple weeks back her dad and his partner suddenly freaked out and invited all their facebook friends. Never had a facebook wedding invite before and I really don't know her very well, so was a little hesitant to attend, but, oh well, her dads are lovely people and her great great aunt who is in her 90s is a total hoot so I'm there. Went & picked up innocuous inexpensive yet cool wedding gift - polka dot glass martini shaker, two giant handblown martini glasses - this morning.

3) Immediately after the wedding am going to a big backyard Black & White artsy birthday party for my daughter's best friend. Looking forward to that, not so much to the wedding.

1. Some construction stuff, I try to do a little at least each weekend. This one, I'm finishing carpeting the stairs and finishing stripping wallpaper from the back bedroom. Maybe I'll varnish the steps in the bathroom too.

2. Work on the neighborhood website with my wife. I just moved it to run on WordPress instead of static pages and now we're going to have to put together the e-commerce stuff for it so that we can sell historic tour tickets.

3. Hopefully hit the (Air Conditioned!) movies to see Inception.

1. I would like to cook something new and exciting, but my house is too hot.

2. I would like to box up many items and donate them to Goodwill, but my house is too hot.

3. I suppose that means whatever I do will involve lots of ice and moving very very slowly.

Wow, hi ecrivain! Long time no see!

1. I really need to phone the competent contractor/repair guy who's been recommended by a friend, to ask about having him do some sorely needed work around the house, but AAARRGGGHHH I hate calling people on the phone. Especially people I don't know. And trying to enter into adult-type business negotiations with them. HATE it.

2. It is dead quiet at work today. Dead, expired, defunct, pushing up daisies quiet. This is not a bad thing except for needing to find something to keep my student employee occupied.

3. Get to drive to Portland tomorrow for the MeFi 11th anniversay meetup! Woo-hoooo!

I'm in retail, so my weekend is Sunday-Monday.

1. Sunday: forced leisure. That nagging pain in my knee? Found out yesterday that it's a torn meniscus! Yippee, another knee surgery! So no hiking, biking, or anything else fun.

2. Monday: nontrivial dental work in the morning, then hopefully a narcotic-induced haze of Netflix-on-demand movies.

3. Weekend project: encourage my earthworms to do the Jeffersons and move on up to the second story of our worm bin. This involves building edible ramps (worms are lousy jumpers) and baiting the upstairs with tempting kitchen scraps. (If you have no idea what I'm on about, google "vermicomposting".)

I got an iPhone diary app for writing. Might post this status update in there.

(Woke up this morning at 5am because of an EARTHQUAKE IN MARYLAND WTF, went to NARA this morning to get my badge, fingerprints taken, and volunteer assignment, then drove to Baltimore to interview the head of Special Collections for a school assignment and just got back home where my brother and his friend were waiting for me to discuss my recovered furniture.)

2. I have a paper to write (see also: interview of #1) that is due on Monday. I'm hoping I can do this tomorrow since I think I've used up all my brain power for today.

1. About to ride to the next town to go to the Farmer's Market. It's about a 22KM round trip towing EM in the buggy on the back. I love my bike! And I love fresh weird veggies.

2. On the down side the kid has been sleeping worse than ever this week and I'm running on fumes. With him sick again and his father sick with sinusitis I'm concerned I will fall down go boom.

3. Hoping we will be well enough to go to the beach on Monday, which is a public holiday. It's Umi no Hi which means Beach Day! Bunch of friends coming down - one who is very preggo bringing a bunch of other very preggo ladies - I am gonna be looking SKINNY I tells ya.

But have a good time!

1. Last night I had planned on going to a baseball game but was tired and stayed in. I made pork tenderloin, mashed potatoes, peas, and salad. Husband and I watched a documentary about Donkey Kong. We liked it a lot. Thursday night was more exciting. We went to trivia night at a local establishment and got second place.

2. Today I am cleaning and having sister and her boyfriend over for dinner. I'm making stuffed shells. We're playing a new dice game she bought that has awesome reviews.

3. Sunday is a party for a very dear friend at the springs. Yay! BBQ!
