Michael Jackson lives (sort of) [More:]Today Mother Beese took me to Epcot Center - where the humidity level was 105%. Having failed to persuade her how awesomely retro it would be to see Captain Eo, I left her on a bench while I went in.

The entrance hall was so deserted that I had to ask the attendant - excuse me, "cast member" - if they were open for business. But inside were several dozen fellow magic-seekers waiting for the next show. To occupy our time, the imagineers screened a "making of" video which featured amusing shots of George Lucas' 1986 hair and Francis Ford Coppola looking very serious as he gave direction to puppets.

The movie itself beggars description of its awfulness. But when Michael made his entrance... the audience cheered. I too was glad to see his face again as it had been before the plastic surgery horrors to come.

And as I filed out at the end, past the cart selling Captain Eo t-shirts, it seemed that his being another "Disney character" - however peculiar an afterlife - was one he would have liked.
Postscript: I didn't find Mother Beese on the bench where I had left her. And after a few minutes passed, I wondered if a 43 year old man was allowed to go up to a Disney employee and say "I lost my mommy."

This is so weird. I just turned off Off The Wall (in favor of the Goldberg Variations) and proclaimed to my roommate: "Michael Jackson is Dead to Me!"

Then I opened metachat at saw your post!

I'll bet you wouldn't be the first.

Maybe your mommy was made into a Disney character while you neglected to keep an eye on her.

Heh. At the time, I'll bet people were like "George Lucas and Francis Ford Coppola were involved in the making of this crap? What the hell?!" Of course, those were the blissful days before the advent of crap like this and this and this and this and...
