Ask MeCha. . .Getting Rid of Desktop. . .WiFi Question Finally unplugging my XP desktop, to which the WiFi router has been connected. Do I need to plug one of the MacBooks into it in order to reconfigure, [More:]or am I good to go? I have QWest DSL.

Meaning, in the future, if there is a problem or I want to change something, can I just type in that string of numbers in the URL bar and go from there? Or do I have to do something up front?
Unless you accidentally turn off wifi or lock yourself out of it, you should be able to do all of the admin tasks via the web interface. I dont' know what router you have but most of them just default to 192.168.0.1.

Hang on to an ethernet cable in case you need to jack directly in to the router.

Oh yes. . .my wife's new laptop will be at that desk where the router is and she may as well use the ethernet jack if she's not moving around with the machine.

Nah, I mean like # said. If you have to reset the router and can't find the default pw, you'll need a direct connection. But otherwise, you don't really need one. Just keep a cable handy for emergencies.

Mine uses 192.168.1.1

I also recommend keeping an ethernet cable around. We sometimes use it if the wireless signal seems to be having a bad day.

Yeah I have the original box the DSL stuff came with (thereby another violation of the "getting rid of 101 things") and it has the string of number that works with mine.

I will connect via the ethernet cable if I want more speed or if I am downloading something big.
