THIS IS A SHOUTING THREAD SO MY LANDLORD ALMOST LOST MY CAT[More:]
MY LANDLORD CAME OVER TODAY WITH ELECTRICIANS. I WAS EXPECTING THEM BUT THEY WERE EARLY AND I WAS IN THE SHOWER. I GOT DRESSED, LOCKED ONE CAT IN THE BEDROOM, AND ASKED WHERE THE OTHER ONE WAS. THE BACK DOOR, THE ATTIC DOOR, THE OUTSIDE DOOR AND THE BASEMENT WERE ALL OPEN. THEY SAID THEY ONLY SAW ONE CAT. I SAID "I HAVE TWO WHERE IS THE OTHER ONE" I RAN UP AND DOWN THE STAIRS LOOKING, HE USUALLY ANSWERS TO HIS NAME.

SO I ASKED THE LANDLORD AND ELECTRICIANS TO HELP ME LOOK AND THEY JUST LEFT. HE IS NOT AN OUTDOOR CAT AND THERE ARE FERAL CATS IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD. AFTER AN HOUR OF LOOKING HE SAUNTERS UP OUT OF NOWHERE (GRAR CATS). IN TEARS, I CALLED MY HUSBAND AND HE CALLED THE LANDLORD TO READ HIM THE RIOT ACT. LANDLORD APOLOGIZED. THE END.

also i know i'm not supposed to have favorites but this is my favorite pet out of the 4.
My therapist just told me he's leaving at the end of June. Damn my insurance and medical residents and their "finishing residency". He was nice. *sniff* I'm too sad to shout. *sniff* I liked how I could talk to him by email and stuff.

I find personal-attack GRAR based on different takes on cultural analysis of something very annoying. The internet /newspapers/ magazines are full of stupid.

I think it's OK to have favorite pets, as opposed to favorite children.

I'M AN OFFICIAL EMPLOYEE NOW, WITH BENEFITS AND A REAL SALARY AND EVERYTHING. YAAAAAAAY. DUE TO PAYROLL TIMING I PROBABLY WON'T GET PAID FOR A MONTH BUT IT'S ALL GOOD.

Can someone remind me what grar is? It's not showing up on acronymfinder.com. :(

WHOEVER SAID MONEY DOESN'T BUY HAPPINESS IS FULL OF CRAP IT WOULD BE SO WONDERFUL IF I HAD MONEY TO PAY SOMEONE TO CLEAN MY HOUSE!! AND TO BUY MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS! AND TO NOT HAVE TO WORK 60 HOURS A WEEK JUST TO BE ABLE TO FINANCE SIMPLE PLEASURES LIKE BOOKS!

grar is onomatopoeia for the sound you make when you're angry. Like "growl"

HUSBAND IS BALKING AT THE UPCOMING 'WEEKEND AT THE CABIN' THAT WE HAVE HAD PLANNED (AND PAID) FOR MONTHS. SUDDENLY, HE DOESN'T WANT TO STAY AT THE CABIN, HE WANTS TO STAY AT A HOTEL, THUS INCURRING AN ADDITIONAL EXPENSE, AND NOT REALIZING THE WEIRD POSITION THIS PUTS ME IN WITH THE FEMALE PARTNERS OF THE TWO COUPLES WE ARE TRAVELING WITH. I KNOW THIS ISN'T A MAJOR GRAR MOMENT, BUT I WOULD RATHER JUST CALL THE WHOLE DAMN THING OFF THAN DEAL RIGHT NOW.

I'M CHANGING CHEAP WEB HOSTS (PUTTING DREAMHOST TO SLEEP) AND USING THE OCCASION TO CLEAN UP AND REORGANIZE MY COLLECTION OF UNUSED/UNDERUSED DOMAINS/SITES AND EVERY FIFTEEN MINUTES I ASK MYSELF "WHAT THE FRAK AM I DOING?!? I'M NO FARKING WEBMASTER!!! I'M HARDLY EVEN A WEBSTER!!!" WHICH HAS INSPIRED ME TO START A BLOG ON THE EXPERIENCE OF BEING A VERY SMALL WEBMASTER (WEBSTER? GET IT? THE SITCOM WITH EMMANUEL LEWIS?) WHICH IS GOING TO BE AT WEBSTER.ONESWELLFOOP.NET AND WHICH I'M SURE I'M GOING TO ANNOY EVERYONE I KNOW ONLINE WITH UNTIL YOU ALL GO GRAR AT ME.

TPS, I know from helping raise them: You will have favorite children. It's just not OK to show it.

PICKUP DRIVER ON CELLPHONE TURNED LEFT RIGHT IN FRONT OF MY BIKE. HAD TO DOUBLE-BRAKE, ALMOST WENT OVER HANDLEBARS. GRAR. Did call non-emergency and report him, though.

Melismata, GRAR stands for GRAR REPLACING ANGRY RETALIATION. It's recursive.

I've been considering this soberly and for a while, and I've decided: I'm going to literally stomp around in futile irritation a little bit instead of just letting the irritation keep stomping around in my head.

In fact, I think I'll put on rainboots and go stomp some puddles. GRAR!

desjardins - livid wouldn't even be a beginning point to how I'd feel like that. I think you were wise to let your husband read the riot act to the landlord. If I had been in your shoes, I'd've had a hard time maintaining any calm or reasonableness with the landlord at that moment. I would have been incredibly angry.

I am also going with all's-well-that-ends well since your cat came back, but I'm stressed on your behalf thinking about how frantic you must have been (I have strictly indoor cats too and that's one of my greatest fears).

GRAR WHY WON'T MY DESIGN FOR MY C++ PROGRAM WORK? IT WAS DUE LAST SATURDAY AND DESPITE WORKING ON IT EVERY WAKING MINUTE I HAVE GOTTEN EXACTLY NOWHERE. AND MEETING THE TAs / TUTORS FOR THE CLASS HAS NETTED ME ZERO (A BLANK LOOK AFTER A WHILE AND A RECOMMENDATION TO TALK TO MY PROFESSOR TO SEE HOW TO DO IT - WHAT ARE WE PAYING YOU FOR IF YOU CAN'T EVEN OFFER A CLUE FOR A BEGINNING CLASS? sigh, I know they aren't gods or anything, and no one can know everything but really? No idea at all?

MY GRADE TURNS INTO AN "F" FOR THIS PROJECT ON SATURDAY NIGHT. GOTTA FIGURE THIS OUT, I CAN DO IT, RIGHT?!

GRAR WHY WON'T MY DESIGN FOR MY C++ PROGRAM WORK?

Compile error? Bombs at runtime? Just wrong output?

I'm overloading operators for an associative array class I'm creating. I'm getting a compile error saying there's no match for an overloaded assignment operator, but I have an overloaded assignment operator, I swear! I suspect I've just got a bad design going - something about overloading and using a hash table and an associative array all at once is freaking me out.

My error is: "no match for 'operator=' in '(&myArray)->array::operator[](((const char*)"hi")) = 7'
"

posted by Sil 19 May | 21:23
(&myArray)->array::operator[](((const char*)"hi")) = 7

Is there an extra set of parenthesis in (((const char*)"hi")) ?

Does your original line of code look like that, or is that just how the compiler thought it looked after being munged?

If this is annoying, just tell me. I like debugging and haven't been doing it enough recently, apparently.
posted by DarkForest 19 May | 21:52
Would love any help you can offer, I've been hacking at it for a long while trying to see why it's unhappy.

My call to my class actually looks like this:

myArray["hi"] = 7;

which throws the above error. I can send you the assignment code / [] code if you are curious :) It's pretty minimal though which is why I think I'm missing something small somewhere.
posted by Sil 19 May | 22:05
I'm guessing your orignal line of code something looked like:
myArray.array[(const char*)"hi")] = 7;
Check the return type of operator [] for whatever type array is.
Then check the assignment operator for that type.
you've probably already done this...
posted by DarkForest 19 May | 22:06
Hmmm...not together, no. Thank you, off to see if that makes things better. The operators all live in the same array class, but I haven't been consistent with return types...
posted by Sil 19 May | 22:11
Ah, posted without preview...
If you want to send me the code, that's fine. My email is either in my profile, or will be in a minute... I won't be able to look at it till tomorrow though. It should be pretty easy if I see the whole thing. Send all files, either zipped or separately...
But I'd check the return type of the [] operator, then make sure that type has an assignment operator for int.
posted by DarkForest 19 May | 22:12
O no worries, DarkForest, I just felt bad taking up the shouting thread with my bad code :)

I'm going to keep hacking at it, and I think you've given me a good push in the right direction. I'm definitely going to sit down and review the rules of overloading because I suspect there's one small one I've missed.

...

As a matter of fact, now that I re-read what you've just posted I suspect I know what to fix!

Thank you so much!!
posted by Sil 19 May | 22:19
Good luck. If it still doesn't work or the TAs can't help with something, just give a holler.
