OH fer fuck's sake dept. Last night I got pulled over (guilty as charged, was talking on my cell while driving- illegal in this state). But then...[More:]when the officer ran my registration, he came back to tell me it was lapsed - and, much worse, as his research went on he told me that the car (which I bought used last fall) had never been registered to me, that the plates on my car were still registered to the long-gone car I traded in for this car, and that was the expired registration. In other words, it looked like I had stolen the car and slapped some old plates on them.

As I processed all this in shock, watching him take the plates off my car and load it onto a flatbed, I realized that the &$@#$% dealer from which I bought the car must have never submitted the registration and plate transfer paperwork I completed when we did the purchase. To all appearances, it looks like (a) my car was last registered to a guy in New York in 2008 and never registered since then (b) these plates belong to an expired Subaru registration and (c) I'm driving a car with no registration and no record of my ownership of it, and someone else's plates. From my own point of view, I registered the car when I got it, did a legal plate transfer, and wouldn't have given it another thought until registration came due again next fall.

The cop was actually nice to me. He could have impounded the car and didn't, and he might have been able to arrest me and didn't. I did have my insurance up to date and on the right vehicle, so that may have helped my cause. Also, I don't come off like your average car thief, so that may have helped. I can't drive the car until I get it legally registered.

But OMGWTFBBQ! I was away from home, visiting a friend - I would have been up shit creek had I not had someone who could give me a lift and somewhere to stay. I have a call in to the dealer and will begin to unravel the mess, even thogh it's Saturday so it will likely only go so far until Monday. And after the car is legal again, I think it's gonna be Better Business Bureau/small claims court time.
Gah, miko! I'm sorry.

Holy crap Miko is a part time car thief?

*sigh*

What a bunch of tedious crapfest to have to deal with honey - hope it goes smoothly from now.

What a nightmare! Damn! I'm glad you didn't have to spend a night in the slammer. Hopefully you can get this worked out with a minimum of hassle and expense.

You used more cusswords in that one post than I've seen you use in the four years I've been here.

You're pissed.

A similar thing happened to my Dad when he drove across country in an RV. He traded in the RV about halfway through. The dealer didn't change the title and the next owner used that vehicle -- still registered in my Dad's name -- to move controlled substances from point A to point B, which led to some legal hassles.

Damn, Miko, that sucks. I sure hope that you hold the dealership liable for reimbursement of all payments that you have to make to get your car shipshape. Thank god the cop was nice and didn't impound your car!
Grrr! I am filled with righteous anger on your behalf!

Boooooo, that stinks.

Oh my jeepers! (I just woke up, this is as sweary as I get while still sleepy.) That's a nightmare --- like, an ACTUAL nightmare! I have nightmares about this sort of Kafkaesque bureaucratic failure. Good for you that you can be a little lighthearted about it.

Something similar happened to a friend a couple of years ago, except that they did arrest her. She was on the way to our place to pick up keys to the beach house for a long relaxing weekend, but instead she ended up in cuffs in the back of a cruiser. Yikes.

I sure hope that you hold the dealership liable for reimbursement of all payments that you have to make to get your car shipshape.

One hopes that you can get reimbursed for all costs associated with this misadventure, e.g., car rental costs or train tickets for travel you would have done in your car. Keep receipts.

Yikes, that's awful! Glad you were stopped by a good cop who understood it wasn't your fault.

I dunno, that would have made for a better story.

That must be a pain, Miko. I hope it all gets sorted out quickly.

Sounds awful! Makes me never want to buy a used car again.

Oh my god. I will be happy to help you tighten the screws on whoever dropped the ball in this whole mess. How annoying. Glad you are okay and that the cop was decent and that this can be easily sorted on your end at least. I am good at small claims, will be happy to help. What state does the car have plates in? Will getting MA plates [if you haven't already] at least give you a driveable car more quickly?

Hey hon?

Can I release the hounds now, and by hounds I mean my bare hands?

Just checking.

I love you. If you ever want to go on an actual crime spree, let me know. Actually, don't.

Still love you,

LT

I didn't hear from you today (which is understandable), but I'm totally leaving my spare key behind for you if you need to borrow my car until you get this sorted out. Not like I need it; I'll be in a different state as of tomorrow!

You guys are the best. I feel lucky to have such great friends.

So my friend who I was staying with in CT has multiple cars in the family, and they lent me one to get me through the week while I start the paper chase. I've been on the phone with the dealer and they are saying they sent the paperwork to the state of Maine, so it's on to there tomorrow to see whether they received it. I don't have copies of the dealer's docs yet but will work on that during the weekdays. And yeah, Jessamyn, I think the quickest way to get safely on the road is to directly register the car in MA - since there is no record of its being registered anywhere else recently, it should not be too crazy to register it as if I had just bought it.

Madhouse!

And yes, I am grateful that I didn't go to jail. That would have been an odd, odd experience. My mental picture of myself sitting meek, shocked, and angry in some gray-painted town or county facility is both hilarious in its incongruity, and creepy.

Thanks for the support, y'all! It will get sorted out, and we have legal interim wheels, so I'm trying to be cool calm and collected. Wierd things can sure happen!

I am also glad you didn't go to jail (which happened to a friend of mine, driving her husband's improperly registered car after they had just moved).

I hope the registration process goes smoothly!

Ya know, it's always the ones you least suspect that are the smoothest criminals....JUST KIDDING!!!! What a PITA to have to deal with something that should have been taken care of easily in the first place!!

Definitely go after the putz who dropped the ball on this one. GRAR!

PS to LT: No crime sprees allowed.

So, will you still be able to access MetaChat when they catch up with the truth and put you in jail? Coz, if not, we need to start recruiting for a replacement straight away.

Miko, you have such an honest face and straightforward demeanor that if you were to actually embark on a Life of Crime, you'd never get caught. Let's go picket the dealership! It would be a fun meetup. Good luck.
