Lars Vilks attacked during art lecture today (video) - the lecture was on the theme "art and freedom of speech, where is the line?" .. I guess right about ..there?[More:] This scene, seen from the lecture stand shocks me in a more personal way than I expected, as I regularly hold lectures in Uni-rooms that look exactly like this, sans police armed with teargas, scuffling, screaming and pepper spray. The screen behind Lars hold the topic that will be discussed. Here the lecture barely even began before someone jumped up and knocked Lars out. Lars is a agent provocateur, who created Ladonia, and later a drawing of Mohammed as a roundabout dog (huge phenomena here at that time) which is why he is currently being escorted by the Swedish security police everywhere he goes.
I'm just really shocked that a uni-room can look like that I guess. My students tend to have a hard time staying awake.

That video makes it a little hard to see what happened...I'm guessing it got recorded by someone ONCE the craziness kicked in. That was quite the scene though...so many police so quickly.

A bit more news here.

I still have my Ladonian passport.

richat, yeah the police have to follow him around.

The video is from Uppsala Nya Tidning, and I read their photographer being interviewed in other papers explaining "I was changing my camera lens when..." - so I'm guessing that's why the video starts after the man in read has already headbutted Vilks. First day on the job mate? Changing the lens mid-action? Tss. He seems taken by surprise as he's filming the lecture screen first.

I haven't even been to Ladonia even though it's right next door. That place is hard to find, man!

What might have saddened me more was watching the un-involved people start shouting and waving their fists. Humanity...

What saddens me the most in the video is that little girl in pink, crying for her dad to pick her up (in the background to the right, dad has a red shirt and yells something before he picks her up). She's clearly really scared and maybe 5 years old. I have baby-radar-instinkts now, I just wanna run over, pick her up, and get her out of there.

Yeah, I noticed her too, dabitch. Sad, that.

The guy in the white shirt here asks in a calm voice the woman to sit down. She has just yelled "Show respect you bastard insect*", he responds very calmly: "Snälla kan inte du visa respect och.." (please can't you show some respect and...), but after that he's interrupted and forced to sit down by what I can only interpret as a very aggressive mob of men. He looks frightened.

He is later spat on when people leave. This video has subtitles, it's after the lecture-fight and the police ask people to leave

I'm not 100% sure of his identity, but he looks a lot like the art columnist of Uppsala newspaper, who writes about the relevant Uni lectures and museum/gallery showings in the city, both in the paper and on the website as well as studies art. The website's latest blog post states: "I've just come from what was a rather unusual lecture, which ended with Vilks being attacked. I'll update later, I'm very tired after having spoken to numerous reporters."

The university of Uppsala is the oldest Uni in the nordic countries, picture all of this happening at a lecture at Oxford or maybe Harvard (not sure what's the best comparison) - I'm shaken to the core at this happening in an open lecture at our most prestigious UNI. What. The. Fuck?

Of course, I've watched the lecture before it erupted as well (sorry about the pre-roll ads). Vilks discusses the work of Andres Serrano, Robert Mapplethorpe, Sally Mann, Chris Ofili, Lana Z Caplan etc... He speaks about the Berlin Opera being cancelled being cancelled, and Dorota Nieznalska being fined for her artwork showing a penis in a cross. When he reaches Sooreh Hera and all hell breaks loose, but you can hear before he starts the film how some in the audience are saying "This isn't art, this is just pornography. Not art. Just porn"

Sorry for posting such a long comment. There's videos of the arrest as well, here. The girl who is arrested was so for spitting in the face of a police officer (kind a no-go anywhere), and she looses her scarf in the scuffle - the police let her friend rearrange it on her head so that she's not walked past anyone without it. The general tone of the newspapers in Sweden is however against the police, with articles asking "did they use too much force" and insinuating much violence used by them.

* the word "kryp" in Swedish is insect/creepy crawly, but is often used as an insult.

Oh, all people arrested (3, one for hitting Vilks, two for spitting at cops) have been released.

Oh, and Uppsala Universitet don't want to have Vilks return to complete his lecture.

Here's a petition to ask Uppsala Uni to allow Vilks to complete the lecture he started.

(and Vilks homepage was hacked yesterday)
