Just call me Lazy McLazyPants So, I've been unemployed for 2 weeks now, and I just. cannot. accomplish. anything. Halp?[More:]I quit my job to move to another state, and fortunately we're doing OK (but not great) on just my husband's income right now, so there's not an incredible sense of urgency about finding another job (yet). But there are myriad other things that I should be doing, both practical and fun. And yet... bleh. How do you get shit done when there is no pressure or deadlines?
Hello there question that is my life! I pretend I am "something" for the day - today I am ....a 1950s Housewife! So I clean and hum and mend socks and put on a big roast (find an excuse to learn how to cook it) and do all kinds of domestic shit like finally put the handsoap in that cool bowl you got LAST YEAR and whatever. Or maybe today I am .....A SCHOLAR! I will read big books about topics that interest me and make notes so I can discuss them later with my SO. Today I am ....a teenager! I will play video games and watch terrible movies without remorse, today is about getting nothing done!

Not having much to do is a great time to exercise casually.

THIS COMMENT in the green helped me out so, so much.

Ugh. I know that feeling all too well.

When I'm stuck in a rut like that, I try to get out of it by starting small and building up momentum. Try doing easy chores around the house that have a visible impact, like putting away the dishes or doing a load of laundry. I find that once I get a few easy things accomplished, it's a lot easier to take on everything else.

I always try to follow the advice I was given in sixth grade study skills class. Do one unpleasant task, then a pleasant one. But don't let yourself do anything you love (even if it's surfing the internet) until you do something unpleasant.

Mostly, I find unstructured time is more productive once I just force myself to get up, away from the computer, showered, and dressed. Which shouldn't be hard, but it pretty much always is.

If you are otherwise healthy, perhaps you are sleep deprived and just need to take a long nap. Do it today, and tomorrow throw yourself into those nagging little chores that accumulate. Work your way up with each succeeding day. However after your nap, should you discover you were not sleep deprived, then you can cross it off your list of possibilities, and crossing anything off a list is an accomplishment.

It's only been two weeks! Rest awhile.

Short of the Arr har har drink beer smoke cigarrettarettes moments of being unemployed; even with funds I have always gotten really bored. Lists helped me to make forward progress of a sort. Exercise, check tire pressure on car, shuffle and cull old piles of paper debris, etc.

OK, so today I've managed to:

- shower
- take dogs for walk
- write a letter
- mail letter
- drop husband off at train station
- put gas in the car

Not terrible. I think part of my problem is that I've drastically cut my caffeine intake, so sleeping is really all I want to do (I'm not depressed, I promise).

You are in the midst of transition. Transitions require a great deal of time spent thinking "What the hell am I doing? This feels uncomfortable." One's job during transition is to feel uncomfortable, to pay attention to signs pointing one toward one's future goals, and to stay calm while feeling uncomfortable and confused. One's other job is to stop putting so much pressure on one's self.

I am a therapist, but this is not therapy/therapeutic advice.
